missing Henry SILLENCE (b.1818)
« on: Monday 01 July 13 22:20 BST (UK) »
can you help me to find Henry Sillence in any census please?.

I have Henry born in 1818 in East Wellow to William and Martha. There is an 1860 Andover marriage for Henry Sillence and Sarah (Teeling). Their son Frederick George was born in 1864 in Southampton (another son Henry Richard was born 1863). I have Fredericks m/cert and b/cert and Henry is his father (a Coachman) and Sarah (Teeling) his mother. In 1871 Frederick is living with his GF William (1786 - 1878). There is  a Sarah Sillence working as a Housekeeper in Southampton in 1871.

BUT I can't find Henry in any census return - I have tried all variations of name + place of birth and I can't find him as a young, single man or living with his wife - consequently I don't have dates of death for Henry or Sarah. Fresh eyes needed to look at this please!

Re: 1860 marriage cert - is Henry shown as a bachelor or a widower?  If he was b 1818 - he would have been 42yrs old so a bit old for a first marriage

GRO index shows surname as Sillince on marriage

Quote
There is  a Sarah Sillence working as a Housekeeper in Southampton in 1871

In 1851 Sarah Teeling b 1830 Combe IOW was in service in Middlesex

The 1871 shows Sarah Sillence as married b 1835 IOW so very likely it's the right 1871 entry

Only have Fredericks actual certs - Henry's marriage in 1860 was from the GRO ref. I thought he was also quite old for a first marriage but still can't find him single, or married to wife 1 or 2 and definitely not living with Sarah in 1861 or 1871.
I have found a married Sarah Sillence, age 28, in 1861 as cook to a Curate in Romsey. In 1871 Sarah Silence, age 36 (age discrepancy) is a Housekeeper to a retired brewer. Same woman??
Her child Frederick is with his Grandparents in 1871 but I can't find his older brother Henry Richard at that date.

Hi RR

Could this be Henry R in 1871? - RG10 piece 1167 folio 31 page 5

Listed as Henry Sillance aged 9 in the household of James (75) and Fanny (72) Teeling in St Helen, isle of Wight.

Also in household are daughter Eliza Seymour (40), grandson Thomas Flux (22) and William C Seymour (9).

Best wishes

Have you seen this possible marriage in Alverstoke?

18/05/1834 Henry Sillence to Harriet Early - just realised he is a bit young  ???

Sorry - on 1841 census he is 40 with wife Harriet and daughter Caroline 6 - HO107 piece 417 folio 1/34 page 19

That   looks like        Henry  ,   as he's down  as grandson ,  In 1841  there's James  and Fanny Teeling ( transcribed as Feeling ) with  a daughter  Sarah aged 8  and an Eliza  aged 10

There's another article about the sudden death of a William Sillence 18/04/1874 in The Hampshire Advertiser.

William was 63 and lived at home with his father, sister Mary Anne and brother Henry Sillence
