Duffield family in Owston Ferry
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 02:37 BST (UK) »
Herbert Duffield, B. 27 Aug 1850, married Amy Broomhead, B. 15 Mar 1855 in West Stockwith, Nottinghamshire.
They had six children -
Thomas Duffield b 25 Sep 1881
Frances Annie Duffield b 20 Feb 1883
Samuel Duffield b 27 Apr 1866
Albert Cecil Duffield b 1888
George Harold Duffield b 21 Jul 1890
Arthur Duffield b 6 Apr 1892

This is the only set information for my ancestors, as it gets very confusing after and before. I know Duffield family moved to Sheffield, Yorkshire at some point, but having no luck in finding who it was originally. Thomas Duffield, married Maud Askew and had 3 children, Arthur, Amy and Thomas Duffield.

Thomas and Maud is the one I'm most interested in and the 3 children, as it runs pretty dry and I can't find any solid connections to Gainsborough apart from Amy Broomhead's family and that Thomas Duffield (son), was born in Gainsborough. Possibility being that Thomas and Maud visited family and Maud gave birth to Thomas while visiting.

Any help that people can offer is most welcome. This is my first post, and I've just stumbled across this brilliant forum by a lucky Google search.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat.

There is mention of Herbert DUFFIELD in the Hull newspaper of Jan 1896 that tells of the death of his son Samuel in Owston Ferry...

Cheers

That's the right person. Curious that it is in a Hull newspaper, but then again, I'm unsure who it was from the Duffield side that moved to Sheffield. Could be any number of reasons.

Just going to add that we have Whithams on my Dads side of the family, but I have very little information for them.

Seems that they also lived in the same household.

I wasn't able to find anymore about that Samuel Duffield, would love to find more.

1911 shows Thomas and Maud as having 4 children, there are 3 in the household on census night but the household relationships are put down in a slightly odd way.Maud born 1880,  West Melton, Yorks.

In your initial post you say there is no frim connection to Gainsborough, that part I don't quite understand as Owston Ferry fell in the Gainsborough reg district. Unless you have a cert for Thomas showing he was born there then his birth could easily be Owston Ferry but be recorded as Gainsborough in the birth index.

It is possible, he was born in 1915. I think my Uncle said they was ancestors living in Gainsborough, but what year, I haven't got a clue.

1911 Owston Ferry,

George Duffield 65 head
Arthur        do    18  nephew
Thomas   do      30 nephew
Maud        do       31 Wife
Reginald    do     11 son       (Arthur Reginald b1900 in birth index?)
George William    7 son
Amy                    4 dau b Lincs, Readby

Birth reg for Amy?
Dec 1906
Duffield    Amy        Thorne    9c   935
Readby is incorrect, likely it's Keadby which is nearby slightly upstream on the river Trent, that would also fit better with the Thorne reg district.

EDIT==
Keadby also happens to be just across the river from Gunness which is where George Duffield gives as place of birth.

Birth reg for Thomas 1915
Duffield    Thomas    mmn.Askew    Gainsbro    7a   1315
