I too saw Purney/Purvey when I looked earlier, but it's not like the P in "Plymouth" ... perhaps there is a certain similarity with the S in "Softening". :)

George, this may not be at all helpful but the "master of my house" reckons that the surname could quite possibly be TURNEY, this also being a well known Irish name.

Just thought I would throw it into the mix.............

Could be. I am inclining to Sweeney mis-spelled as Swiney.

Can't see that at all. I'm still with Purvey/Purney, both of which are valid surnames.

I think I will have to definitely get hold of the marriage certificate, which, hopefully, will clear up the mystery!
