Eight badges >>>more help still needed!<<<
« on: Sunday 12 June 05 19:25 BST (UK) »
Please can you give me any information about the 8 badges. I have written at the side what is says on each badge. 1, 6 & 7 are pin & clasp, 5 is a button and the rest are vertical 'hooks'.

5,6,7,& 8 were my dads and the others belonged to other relatives. All are now dead so I cannot ask them.

Thanks

Jane

The link below named 2,4 & 8 but can you give me information on the others?

Also where would they wear the badges on their uniform. Are some for the jacket and some for the hat?

Hi Jane, I was actually in the ATC(air training corps) for a while. That is a hat badge. It is now basically the air cadets.

Here is a link.

http://www.aircadets.org/atc_history.html

Also if you click on the combined cadet force/history link it tells you about the air defence cadet corps as well.

And try this for number 1, has a crew list so you can see if your rellie is listed as well.

http://www.homestead.com/nelson1/hms1.html

And this will probably help as well

And finally, this looks like number 3 to me

Which is from this site

Hi,

No 1, is what is known as a Royal Naval Sweetheart badge.

Sailors gave them to their girlfriends / sweethearts.

So someone onboard HMS Nelson had a sweetheart.

Thanks for the reply. I looked on the HMS Nelson site but it only lists officers. How would I find out about the ordinary crew? I think I know the surname of the owner but not the 1st name or any idea of the year. Were sweetheart badges only wartime or are they used all the time?

Hi,

Re the name of the crew. Crew lists of officers and men are not usually available. They normally only give officers names as you have found out. You would need the Naval Service record of the man you are talking about, to see when he was on her. I am afraid that unless you are the next of kin then the Navy will not let you have a copy. Perhaps you could ask the family of the man to see if they have it.

Sweetheart badges I believe were only used in time of war. Never heard of them when I was in. We were only having minor skirmishes then. I think they were mainly 1st and 2nd World War made.
