Thomas Scott of Cooms on headstone, Ewes Kirk
« on: Friday 19 July 13 10:58 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Does anyone have any information or even better a photo of Cooms farm?  On headstone 8 of the Ewes kirk, it states "Thomas Scott of Cooms".  I believe this is my gggg-father and would love any further information.

Regards
Jenny

National Library of Scotland has old maps online at http://maps.nls.uk/index.html  These include old Ordnance Survey maps which name each farm, so you might get a location of Cooms Farm from that. Then you can match it to a modern Google map and see if the farm still exists.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

Thanks JM,
I believe I have found the farm on Google Earth but as it is on a dirt road, I cannot see it at street level so am hoping someone might have a photo.  I have searched the name on Google but nothing by that name comes up so was hoping someone local could give me some info on the farm.

Regards
Jenny

There's a bit more about Cooms on the Langholm Archive site, unfortunately no photographs.

I assume you have the full text from the headstone at Ewes which includes your Thomas Scott of Cooms, Jenny.

I have a recent OS map which includes Cooms  and also Brieryshaw which I think may also be of interest.  The map is Landranger series Scale 1:50 000 Sheet No. 79 Hawick and Eskdale Area.

Grid References are Cooms 415900 and Brieryshaw 367938

No photo I'm afraid  :)

Thanks for that Link Walter, I think those mentioned are related to Jane Ogilvie, one of my ancestors but still need to do more research so that's a big help
