Hi Everyone
Thanks for the information. I shall start a new thread.

My family migrated to Australia (which is where I live) around 1860. These Craggs are my ancestor's cousins and nephews. I'm trying to ascertain whether any still survive in the area today.

Hello Brenda,
I just found your post mentioning the family of Joseph Shepherd who married at Kirkby Lonsdale about 1751. I'm hoping you can send me the information you have on his first marriage and children. He is my 4X Grt Grandfather. I have details on his second wife and family, and information from his will (although I haven't seen that myself as yet). Do you know the name of his first wife?

Thanks very much,
Barbara

Hello Barbara
Joseph is also my 4 x gt grfather.  Perhaps you are also connected to the Hird / Newhouse / Lamb families in the area, as I am?
Please let me have your email by pm and I can let you have info
Kind regards, Brenda

Hello Brenda,
Thanks for the reply. No, I don't have those names. My line to Joseph Shepherd and Jane Collier Addison is through their son Joseph, born 1782 Whittington, and his wife Ann Parker. Their son Joseph Shepherd (born 1806 Whittington) married Jane Birkett. They are my GG Grandparents.
Thanks again. My email is barbarajeanaa@comcast.net

You can see the two Docker hall farms on Google Satellite/Earth on Docker Lane, which leads from the road between Burton-in-Kendal and Whittington.  There are bits of its history on other references on Google, too.  Our family used to drive past the end of the lane quite often when heading for Kirkby Lonsdale.  Curiously there was a well-known couple, Lord and Lady Docker, often in the news at that time and in my childish mind I connected them with this place, but most probably with no reason at all.  You can read all about the notorious Lady Docker and her husband (described somewhere as the Posh & Becks of the 1950s) on Wikipedia, if you are interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norah,_Lady_Docker

There is another Docker not all that far away from the one you are interested in.  It's very close to Kendal and also has a Docker Hall, again a farm.

Did you make it to Docker Hall Barbara? My family have lived there for the last hundred years or there about. The name Joseph shephard rings a bell actually. We have some old for sale notices relating to the farm - I think his name may have been on those perhaps? I will check next time I'm home. The farmhouse has been there since the 17th century, and was a pottery before it was a farm. If you haven't made it up there yet then I'm sure my parents would be happy to show you around.
