 Looking for Robert Dempster b 1837 Ireland son of Hugh Dempster and Jane Conroy. Trying to find Hugh and Jane's marriage, Robert Dempster and any siblings. Sorry but this is all i have to go on. Any info much appreciated.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Robert Dempster and Catherine Milligan ( Mulligan or Millighan ) at Bankhead Dalry 6th December 1870 - his 2nd wife

Age 38 occupation Pit Roadsman - Widower of Patrick Row Dalry

Father - Hugh Dempster coachman dec'd
Mother Jane Dempster nee Connary - not Conroy ??

To Catherine Milligan 38 occupation cook - spinster of Bankhead Dalry

The 1881 Census for Leahole Cotters House Beith states that Robert 49 Widower was born in County Down Ireland

I see from other messages that you have seen the death certificate for Robert Dempster age 70 died 17th July 1903 Beith which shows his three wives but the big problem for me is that his parents are declared as John Dempster and Margaret Dempster !! I have assumed that Hugh and Jane is correct

My wife is descended from Robert and Catherine via son John

Hi,

There is a Hugh Dempster jr in the Griffith valuation taken in Co Down 1863-4. Ballybeen Comber. This implies a Hugh Sr existed so i would check the parish records here. Do you know the religion?

Hello

The Dempster marriages in Scotland apart from one
 ( Presbyterian ) took place according to the forms of the Church of Scotland

Robert Dempster's first marriage took place in Beith Scotland in 1858 . He was 24 and lived in Ardrossan

As there is no trace of Hugh in "Scotlands People" records I assume he remained in County Down

We could assume Robert left Ireland at say 18 in 1852 - perhaps Hugh was 50-60 years old by then - born 1790 to 1810 ?

Hugh died prior to 4/6/1858 as the marriage certificate of Robert and Martha Graham ( 1st wife ) states that Hugh was deceased ( of course this could be an untruth )

Robert's mother could be Jane Conroy Connary or Conway-= each marriage certificate shows a different name ??

Hugh was a coachman - not likely to have owned property I would assume - unless he was self employed perhaps

HI,

I think your best route is to see if the Anglican parish records survive from this parish and look for the family. FAiling that, try other parishes with Dempsters from the GV. These are best sourced in Belfast.
