The Hull Charterhouse
« on: Thursday 25 July 13 16:11 BST (UK) »
I've done a great deal of research on the history of the Hull Charterhouse - I've even written the book but don't have the money to get it published  :(  But I'd like to hear from anyone who has discovered that their ancestors lived there, especially if you know anything about how they came to get a place, or what their lives were like there.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Hi Suttontrust

Believe one of my relatives lived there, Robert Sleight appears there in 1891 and again as an inmate brother on the 1901 census at Gods House Hospital commonly called the Charterhouse.

No idea why he went there, but was widowed in 1879, a grocer most of his life.

Remember when I found him living there did a little research of my own about the Charterhouse as had never heard of it before.

Thanks, Kev.
This website - http://hullcharterhouse.weebly.com/  - might add to your knowledge, and we also have a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/CharterhouseHull  There's a photo on there from around the time of your relative.  Perhaps he's on it.

Thanks Suttontrust for the links, most interesting. Haven't had a look down this line of mine for sometime, prompting me I need to research this line further - have been tied up researching other family lines.

Cheers

Hi, my GT.GT. grandfather was in The Charterhouse, my cousin sent me a newspaper clipping
form I believe The Hull Daily Mail, This reads as follows;
Brian Bielby(72), cab driver;John Young(69) engine-driver; and Faith Rane Kynman (68),widow, were elected to vacant rooms in the Hull Charterhouse.
So it would seem that people were elected(by who?) to the Charterhouse, Brian Bielby the first mentioned was my gt.gt. grandfather.
Best Wishes Clive

Hi, Clive.  What's the date on that?
If it's before 1901, people were appointed to places by the city council, after applying to the Master; after that it was by the trustees.  The word "elected" was used, but wasn't really appropriate.  Even today, new appointees have to be agreed by the city council, although it's a formality; their names are read out in a full council meeting.

Hello.  My gggrandmother Sarah Mason, widowed twice, spent the last 2 years of her life in the Charterhouse, and died in January 1901. She entered the Charterhouse in December 1899 and was living in Room 3 at the time of her death. For the benefit of anyone else researching residents, Room 3 was previously occupied by Hannah Ma[iv/w]er (died Nov 1899) and subsequently occupied by Rebecca Chapman.

My GGG grandmother Ann Oxtoby (nee Burton) died there in 1865.  Do you knowif they have records of her parents?
