Thank you very much JM and Sue,

Just a very quick reply (I am travelling abroad and these days don't have very much time and internet facilities).

Sorry for duplicating posts. I totally agree that they should be merged.

I can confirm that Eleanor Marie Smithwick (nee Wilson) is George Anthony John's sister.

Thank you very much for all the information. I'll try all your suggestions and see what I can find.

Cheers.

What is his name, occupation & address on the 1911 Census?
If he was born 1894 as you say he would be working by then.

You say he was *PUT* on a ship in London 1915?
Why would he be put on a ship if he was 21 years old?
Did he do something to upset the family?
This was during WW1... It wasn't easy getting a passage on a ship during that time!

Hi Merlin,

According the 1911 Census:

Name: Anthony Wilson
Occupation: Scholar.
Address: Main Street, Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford

I have no idea what happened in 1914. I thought that he had emigrated to Australia in or about 1915 but, according to the newspaper cuttings, it seems that he emigrated in 1914. It does not say anything about the month, so it could be just before the war broke out. I also know that after the death of his sister: Eleanor Smithwick in December 1947, the family tried to locate him but he never appeared.

So, up to now and according to the newspaper cuttings, it seems that he emigrated to Australia in 1914, and that his last notice was in 1933 in Melbourne and that the family believed that he had moved to Sidney.

Any idea of how to trace him?

Thanks and cheers.

Apart from the newspaper cuttings already posted on this thread, and thus from the various digitised papers online from the Australian National Library,  what other source/s  for your family/oral history give you to indicate that your elusive chap was actually put on a ship to Australia?

Did the family have other sons who were sent away to perhaps avoid conscription during WWI?
Could he have perhaps have joined a religious order?

Cheers,  JM

Hi JM,

I have no other sources that the ones you mention. And no other sons were sent away. I always thought that the reason why he was sent to Australia was to earn his living.

Cheers.

 - here appears a:
A Wilson (b. 1895, to Melbourne 1914)
G Wilson (b. 1895, to Melbourne 1913)
G.A. Wilson (b. not listed, to Melbourne 1913)

You will find many cases like this (and some with no first name at all).

You probably can assume that the family did believe him to have gone to Melbourne (or have been in Melbourne at some point - this was not necessarily his first stop), that they had heard from him around 1933/4, at which time he was going to Sydney - probably looking for work.

He doesn't seem to have signed up for WWI in Australia unless he used an assumed name; perhaps he had signed up in the UK, or been in the Navy or Merchant Navy, and jumped ship over there?  Does he have the extra name "John" in any Irish records?

From the notice it appears that last they heard of him, he had no children that they knew of (" his children if any").

So from the three options given, the most probable would be: A Wilson, born 1895, from London to Melbourne in 1914. Ports of departure, destination port and year of departure matches with the information provided by the family. And in respect of the initial "A", Anthony is how the family used to call him.

Regarding the extra name of John, I don't know if there is any Irish record containing this name. And according to the family, we do not think that he had any children, at least in 1934.

What else can I do to try to locate him?
