William Francis THOMPSON 35th Foot
« on: Saturday 03 August 13 01:28 BST (UK) »
On my great great grandfather's (William Frederick Thompson) Scotlands People marriage record in 1861 it shows his father as William Francis Thompson (by then deceased), as sergeant major 35th foot.  I would like to find out more about him and his army career.

I believe he was born about 1810 but have no idea where or who his parents were.
As shown on the same marriage record it shows his wife as Agnes (possibly Mary Agnes) Hargreaves but cannot find any record of their marriage

There is information on Families in British India Society on a William Francis Thompson who served there and wondered if it could have been him.  How would I make the connection?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks
Elaine

hi Elaine
I,m wondering if others are like me regarding your rellie I,ve crawled all over the pension records for him but can,t find him which doesn,t make sense only if he was a sgt major he,d have to have served for a long time which would have meant he was due to retire with a pension now either for what ever reason his record has been lost or someones telling porkies on the marriage record ,
I,ve tried looking for him as Thompson and Thomson  but somethings amiss but don,t know what is that marriage record all you know about w f Thompson 35th foot .

He may have died while serving. The records that survive are mainly from old pension records.

Thank you t mo and km for your replies.

Ok so if he possibly died overseas could this possibly be his army record?  I know a sergeant major and what this record portrays are quite different, so I'm probably barking up the wrong (ancestry) tree :)

Regards
Elaine

hi Elaine
what you have is better than nothing it gives some info as to his movements but a pension record would have far more detail regarding his rise through the ranks may be even a demotion if he was naughty then being made up again also good conduct pay wether he got any education whilst in service [ remember a lot of these men couldn,t read or write back then ] as well as his medical history and treatment  , so far more comprehensive overall .

ps the record you,ve posted from the fibis site probably is copyrighted to them so I would delete it before the mods see it they,ll lift it anyway with a rebuke ! I,ve been caught in the passed still have the slapped wrist marks now ;D
