GRUNDISBURGH look-up request
« on: Sunday 04 August 13 23:18 BST (UK) »
Hi!

Could someone kind with access to the Grundisburgh registers please check the baptism of Robert SKEET - c1806 (he was a minor when he married in Oct 1828 & described as 45 in the 1851 census).

Very many thanks

He may not have been born in Grundisburgh
Robert SKEET (abode Rushmere St Andrew) married Elizabeth ABLITT 10 Oct 1828, Grundisburgh.

Badingham might also be an option if Grundisburgh & Rushmere prove fruitless.

Many thanks for that - but Robert said he was born in Grundisburgh in the 1851 census;  the other possibilities are Rushmere St Andrews, where his father farmed, or Culpho, where his parents married.  There are Skeets in Badingham, but I've never found a connection.

Hi jkgla,

Just to add to Keziah's post, Robert Skeet & Elizabeth Ablitt married by Licence.

In the Suffolk Burial Index (ex Suffolk FHS) are these entries which may be of some use;

3-3-1855 Robert Skeet of Rushmere (49) buried Ipswich Stoke Green Baptist. (which gives a possible
year of birth as 1806)

3-7-1805 Robert Skeet of Culpho (65) Hu, Farmer, buried Culpho St.Botolph

Many thanks for this extra info.  I did not have the younger Robert's burial - and as his wife's family were all members of Grundisburgh Baptist, this fits in well.  I am trying to find some baptisms.

Thank you for this

If they were baptists then it might explain why you cannot find infant baptisms. It is likely they would have been baptised as adults.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that as stated Baptists didn't baptise infants but I believe they did record births.

There is a Births book from Grundisburgh Baptist Church held by the Strict Baptist Historical Society at the Evangelical Library in London.

It lists

Robert, Son of Robert and Sarah Skeet of Grundisburgh was born Octr 4th 1805.
John Thompson Minister.

Hi Marcus,

Many thanks for this - Robert Skeet is my maternal great great grandfather, son of Robert Skeet & Sarah Dove - but I didn’t have his exact date of birth.
I did not know either about the Strict Baptist Historical Society or The Evangelical Library
The family were mainly non-conformist, so this is new and interesting information.

I really appreciate that you have taken the trouble to send me these details.

Best wishes,  jkgla.
