George brown - drunk in St David's 1891
« on: Monday 05 August 13 15:10 BST (UK) »
from the Pembrokeshire herald 1891:

DRUNKENNESS, &C. George Brown was charged with being drunk and disorderly. The defendant did not appear. P.C. 33 deposed that on the 15th ult, he saw defendant very drunk in the Mariner's Square. Defendant swore, called him a vagabond, and said that the police were hunting him about, and that he was not drunk then. He afterwards saw him going down High Street. Defendant had been refused beer at a public house that morning, and had been turned out. The Bench fined defendant 10s with costs, stating that if he was brought up again, and convicted, he would be sent to prison.'

This street is the next road to a relative of mine George Brown's (born 1850 in Ludchurch and married to Catherine) home at the Quay in 1891.  There may of course be 2 George Browns!  I have looked at the 1881 and 1891 census and he does seem to be the best (only) candidate.  Does any one have any other candidates that they can find?

Two other appearances recorded by the same paper 28 Aug 1891 and 22 May 1891. One item mentions "the Quay".

A Joseph Brown also up before the beak regularly, charged with the same offence!

His brother was called Joseph........Looks bad for the family reputation.  His wife was sent to the clink for a month for handling stolen goods according to another article in the newspaper.

It gets worse!  Habitual drunk seems accurate.
