car accident court case
« on: Wednesday 07 August 13 22:21 BST (UK) »
Hi all
My great uncle was killed by a car in Tunbridge Wells in the early 50s, the case went to court.
How could I find more info about this.

Any help appreciated

I would look in the local paper for this area to see if the court case was reported. You can contact the local Library to see if they have got copies for the time period. If you are not able to visit the library in person some kind person on here may be able to help.

Panda ,
I,m not sure when the actual accident was or court case was. But I do have a burial date. So how far back from this date would I look?
Thanks

Hi Springer
I personally would look at least a year before the actual death date to see if anything is recorded. Have you tried googling the name etc to see if anyone else has posted anything about the accident on line.
Some of the local newspapers are available on line have you tried a search of these? I'm not sure of the coverage for the Tunbridge Wells area as this is not part of Kent I'm as familiar with but someone from that area may be able to do a more detailed search for you if you can let us know what information you have such as name and dates etc.

Good luck in your research.

Hi there,
The Tunbridge Wells Courier is now available online via the British Newspaper archive, http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/, Its a subscription site but if you are in the UK it should be free through your local libraries computers. The search engine is v.good on it so you should find what you are looking for.
The hard copy of the Courier archive is held by TW Civic Society.

Does the burial register not give a date of death?  I would concentrate around the dates of death and burial for a newspaper report to start with.

I couldn't see the TW Courier or any Kent newspapers for that date on the British Newspaper Archive, is it not in the list Farlington?

Tunbridge Wells Library may be able to help with a news report http://www.kent.gov.uk/KCC.Libraries.Web.Sites.Public/LibraryDetails.aspx?aid=0&lid=99&uprn=100062541606

It might also be worth checking to see if an inquest was held.

It might be worth getting a copy of his death certificate as this might give additional information as to when the accident occurred if the certificate was issued on information supplied by a coroner.

Hi Casalguidi,   It seems that the Courier in the British Newspaper Archive stops in 1949 which is a shame as we are looking at the 1950s. As they are scanning all the time i guess they will appear in the future
Library as you suggested  or Civic Society would be the next stop.
