COMPLETED - Census 1851 - HICKS
« on: Sunday 11 August 13 12:32 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would someone be kind enough to check the 1851 census for James HICKS, b. 1817?
He was born in either Ashton Keynes or Avebury, and was probably an Ag lab or a shepherd.

He had the following children (I know of) by 1851:
Sarah (b. 1842)
Hannah (b. 1850)

His wife was Mary, though I do not yet know when they were married, or if this was his first wife. Some of his children were also born in Gloucestershire, so he could have also been in that county in 1851.

Many thanks for your help!

Wow, that was fast. Thank you both very much.
I'm sure that this is the one I am looking for, though I think that the age is probably incorrect in 1851. The 1861 census has him at 44 years old, and Mary 2 years younger, so would fit with the 1841 result.
Very much appreciated!  :D

Brilliant. I think you've got it Jackie!
I had a look for the marriage, but found lots of possibilities, across the two counties, particularly since they could have easily married pre 1837.
I wasn't aware of the Glocs. BMD search site - until now I have only used FreeBMD, so that is very helpful.
The Trotman link gives me another angle to investigate.
I also found the 1817 baptism yesterday, but haven't managed to find a marriage between Barnard and Jane yet.
It also looks like he had a sister - Mary Ann, who was born in 1814, but where the father's name is transcribed as 'Barnett'. I've not been able to verify these yet.
Thanks for your support.
