Laing Family from North Uist 1853
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 12:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all
More ancestors of mine left N.U. on HMS Hercules 1853 and only some arrived Port Adelaide on that ship. They were all from the same Laing family.
The father Alexander Laing died N.U. about 1847, and the mother Catherine (Macdonald) Laing my ancestor, immigrated with her children on Hercules.
They were eldest daughter Janet (19) and new husband Angus Ferguson (27), daughter Margaret Laing (17) {these three arrived P.A. on Hercules}, mother Catherine (45), Ann (16), Ranald (14) listed as Ronald, Alexander (12) and Flora (8) were on Hercules when it left Campbelltown 1852 and were reported as transhipped to Olivia sometime during the voyage. Probably when Hercules was in quarantine in Cork, Ireland Feb, '53.
They do not appear on the Olivia passenger list. A search of all passenger lists for 1852/53 failed to find any of them.
Any information about the Ferguson's and Janet Laing after they arrived Adelaide would be great.
Illumination of possible connections to the missing Laing family members would also aid me in my search.
PS Flora was aged 8 at the time, don't know why funny face appeared there in the text!

Hi Ken

I found the details below and I think they are your people. I don't understand what some of the abbreviations on the death registration information mean, but other Rootschatters probably will.
The details for the funerals I found on the Trove Newspapers website.

Hope this helps

Hi Ken

I have had a bit of spare time and have found the following details on those who could be your family in South Australia. The ages seem to tie up with those in your post. Yahl paddock also seems to be where the family settled in South Australia.

The surname of Laing seems to be transcribed as Link. Maybe their accent?

Bye for now

Following on from Noell's hints, this seems to be death notice for Nicol McCall in 1913

Hi Ken and Rosball

I am now reasonably sure the Link family are the Laing family from North Uist, Scotland.
I just found this death notice in the Mount Gambier paper. It seems to be the Ranald (Ronald) Laing in the first post by Ken.

Border Watch Newspaper Mount Gambier Saturday 1st February,1873
DIED.      LINK.-At Allandale, on the 28th instant, Mr. Ronald Link, farmer, a native of North Uist, Invernesshire, Scotland, aged 30 years. (Inverness papers please copy.)

Hi Noells & Rosball

Thank you for the great work! I never would have transposed Laing into Link. I had been trying names like Lane and Lang without success.

I get my own broadband connection on the Tuesday 27Th, so will let you know how my research of your findings progresses when I can spend more than an hour on the Internet, and have all my Family Tree details at hand. I am using the local library at the moment, which is very limiting on what I can accomplish in any session.

I have taken a copy of this on my USB stick and will peruse it at home over the weekend. I had begun to think that Mother Catherine and the junior children had been lost at sea and never reached Oz. I have been searching for any trace of them on passenger list for some time now without success.

If either of you require assistance with research in Scotland, please let me know and I will do all I can.

Many, many thanks
Ken

Hi Ken

Very pleased to help you.  You won't know yourself with broadband on your home computer.
I will be interested to hear how all this information from Oz fits into your family tree.
It is midnight on Friday night here (23/8) but I will see if I can uncover anything further on the Laing (Link) family over the weekend.

thanks for you offer of help with Scottish research.  At this stage I have gone back as far as I can go there (1700's) but maybe in the future I might need some assistance.

Hi Ken
Some more information on that family.
You will see that Margaret Link and Flora Link were both married in the Travellers Rest Hotel in Allendale East. I found a list of the Publicans for that hotel and have copied the relevant ones for you.

Owners of the Travellers Rest Hotel in Allendale, South Australia
1864 – 1866 -   N.  McCall
1872 – 1877  - Robert Kerr
1883 – 1916 -  Robert Kerr

Here are some more details on Flora Link/Kerr who died in 1891. Firstly births of children.
Surname: KERR               Given Names: Alexander Dick         Birth Date: 1875-12-24
Father: Robert KERR                          Mother: Flora LINK
Birth Place/Residence: Port MacDonnell
District Code: Grey           Book: 161                Page: 232

Surname: KERR          Given Names: Adam John        Birth Date: 1877-08-13
Father: Robert KERR             Mother: Flora LINK
Birth Place/Residence: Allendale East
District Code: Grey            Book: 189                       Page: 81

Surname: KERR            Given Names: Jean Jannet          Birth Date: 1879-09-23
Father: Robert KERR                 Mother: Flora LINK
Birth Place/Residence: Allendale East
District Code: Grey
Symbol: A              Book: 227           Page: 237

Surname: KERR            Given Names: Ronald   Birth Date: 1881-12-06
Father: Robert KERR                   Mother: Flora QUIK
Birth Place/Residence: Allendale East
District Code: Grey
Symbol: A            Book: 272               Page: 117

Surname: KERR             Given Names: Catherine          Birth Date: 1884-04-10
Father: Robert KERR                     Mother: Flora LINK
Birth Place/Residence: Allendale East
District Code: Grey       Book: 326             Page: 151

then I found that Robert Kerr married again after Flora's early death. This was quite normal in those days for someone to look after the widowers' children. The age fits for Robert Kerr.

Groom: KERR          Given names: Robert             Bride: MCCORMICK       Given names: Margaret J
Date: 1892-06-10
Groom Age: 54          Status: Widow            Groom's Father: Adam KERR
Bride Age: 27      Status: Single                      Bride's Father: Henry MCCORMICK
Place: Manse Mount Gambier         District: Grey            Book/Page: 171/990

This from the Newspaper -

MARRIAGE.
KERR-McCORMICK.-On the 10th June, at the Manse,Mount Gambier, by the Rev. R. A. Caldwell, Robert   Kerr to Margaret Jane (Maggie), youngest daughter of Henry McCormick, both of Allandale East.

I have not yet looked for any children to this couple, however sadly Margaret Jane McCormick/Kerr also died at a young age

Surname: KERR            Given Names: Margaret Jane   Death Date: 1906-08-14
Age: 41y                  Status: Married             Relative: Robert KERR (H)
Residence: Allendale East       Death Place: Allendale East
District Code: Grey              Book: 320              Page: 3

I also have details on the McCall family, but will send them by a separate post.
