Hi Ken,

Only just came across your Laing post and wanted to let you know that I'm descended from Angus Ferguson and Janet Laing via their son Roderick who is my great great grandfather.
I have lots of information about the family and their time in Australia. I even have a photo of Angus and Janet and a photo of a jug they brought out to Australia on the Hercules.
I've been looking into their time back in North Uist, would love to share any info you may have on it.

I don't know if you still monitor this thread, but I think we share common ancestors. My paternal grandmother was Harriet Laing, born 04 May 1889, North Uist. Her husband was Archibald Sinclair of Dunoon Argyllshire. Our common Laing ancestors may have been Ronald Laing and Margaret MacDonald.

I have information on Harriet's family which may add to your tree if we are related.

Harriet Laing had two children, Robert Alexander Laing Sinclair. my father and Flora Sinclair, who was known as Florence to several branches of the family, which I only discovered this year. Flora was married twice.

Hi Ken,  My ancestors (Macleans) also came from North Uist on the Hercules.  Have you found the information you were seeking - I realise this post is an old one but I am just exploring Rootschat.   You may also be interested in a new Facebook page called "Friends of the White Hut Gaelic Cemetery"
I also know of people in Mount Gambier, South Australila who had realtives Laings on the ship ... have you made that connection by any chance.   Their surname is Henness.  If not let's know and I can pass on your details... email would be great.

Hi all
More ancestors of mine left N.U. on HMS Hercules 1853 and only some arrived Port Adelaide on that ship. They were all from the same Laing family.
The father Alexander Laing died N.U. about 1847, and the mother Catherine (Macdonald) Laing my ancestor, immigrated with her children on Hercules.
They were eldest daughter Janet (19) and new husband Angus Ferguson (27), daughter Margaret Laing (17) {these three arrived P.A. on Hercules}, mother Catherine (45), Ann (16), Ranald (14) listed as Ronald, Alexander (12) and Flora ( were on Hercules when it left Campbelltown 1852 and were reported as transhipped to Olivia sometime during the voyage. Probably when Hercules was in quarantine in Cork, Ireland Feb, '53.
They do not appear on the Olivia passenger list. A search of all passenger lists for 1852/53 failed to find any of them.
Any information about the Ferguson's and Janet Laing after they arrived Adelaide would be great.
Illumination of possible connections to the missing Laing family members would also aid me in my search.
PS Flora was aged 8 at the time, don't know why funny face appeared there in the text!

The Henness family name is not one that I've come across so far and look forward to exploring that possible link.

I attach a pdf of links found in my Australian research so far and hope you can recognise someone in it.

My NU ancestors have a few links to MacLeans there and it would be good to expand that also.
