great great grandfather Joseph Alexander Dawson Sr, born in Dublin
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 19:02 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I was wondering if anybody had more information about my great great grandfather. His name was Joseph Alexander Dawson Sr, he was born in Dublin and when he about 3-4 years old he moved to England ( I don't know where about ), he was married twice, the first time with Ann Adams, they had 7 kids: Joseph Jr, Molly, Jean, Alexander, Edith, Josie and Ann. When his wife died she was pregnant and she lost a kid called Andrew  :'(. Joseph Sr married Isabel or Isobel Emslie and they didn't have any kids. I would like to know something about his parents, his marriages, when was he born and where did he live, and any other information. I would be very happy if somebody knows these informations. Thank you very much. :)
Giorgio.

Can you give us some dates, please? Approx date of birth for Joseph A Dawson, dates & places of the 2 marriages [he will have given his father's name & occupation on the marriage register], dates & places of birth of children etc.

I'm sure we can help  :)

EDIT: Sorry, I see you said you don't know where he lived!

ANOTHER EDIT: Forgot to say - welcome to rootschat giorgio!

Hi, I Know that his first child Joseph A Dawson Jr was born on the 12 September 1910 in Aberdeen, he married Agnes Spark Emslie and he had three childs Edith born in 1930 , Josephine in 1932 and Arlene in 1941 all born in Aberdeen. The other son Alexander married Elsie Hepburn and had at least one child called Alexander Downie Dawson born 21 February 1940 in Aberdeen, that played in Manchester United from 1957 to 1961. Joseph A Dawson Sr was a fisherman so as his son Joseph A Jr. All of his kids were born in the Aberdeen area. Thank you very much.  :)

Thank you for the welcoming  :)

EDIT: Joseph A Jr died in 1956 for heart attack.

As it looks as though the searches will need to be done on the ScotlandsPeople website
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
I think you may be better off having the query transferred to the Aberdeen board. Most of the results you require will need credits on that site, as Scottish records are not available on the usual subscription sites [ancestry, findmypast]. You can search the indexes for free, but need credits to see any detail.

There is a death on ScotlandsPeople for a Joseph Dawson aged 69 in 1942 Aberdeen North. I suspect this is your Joseph A Dawson Snr. If you register & buy some credits for ScotlandsPeople you can download the death certificate. Scottish death certificates always name both parents so you will be able to start going back through the generations. If he definitely was born in Dublin you can use the ifhf [www.rootsireland.ie] site to search for them. Again you will need to register. It is free to search the indexes but credits are needed to see the details.

He was born in 1879 in Ireland. His parents were Joseph Dawson and Mary Ann and he had a sister, Mary. He was orphaned at an early age and moved to Liverpool. My grandma (his granddaughter) says Molly wasn't Joseph's daughter but I'm not sure. His second wife, Isobel Emslie, was the aunt of his daughter-in-law Agnes Spark Fisher. He died on March 29th 1941, when his ship was sunk by a mine.

Alexander Dawson and Elsie Hepburn had 3 more children in Aberdeen: Joseph, Edith & Elsie. They then left Aberdeen and my grandma thinks they had about 4 more children but isn't sure.

EDIT: There was definitely 8 children
