There is a Hermann Heinrich Schmidt born in 1871 in South Australia http://www.genealogysa.org.au/
(but the site is not behaving currently  :( ).  From memory (who am I kidding  ;D) the father was Johann Schmidt and mother was Mathilde Zimmerman.

This site about blacksmiths http://blacksmiths.mygenwebs.com/australia-1.php suggests  that this man married Louisa Mary Baker  in 1898 (so not quite a match for the birth of your 1896 grandfather ... ??? ) .  However it does tell us that he became known as Herman Henry Smith.

The 1898  marriage notices refer to him as Herman Henry Schmidt, youngest son of Mr G Schmidt of Whyte-Yarcowie  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article29431163 and http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article87790049

Well it isn't looking very promising but it may help to exclude a possibility

regards,
   Ros

Ros I'm having internet problems with the display on TROVE.
Who did Herman marry in this announcement and I'll check his age.  I can't see it so far on the indexes.

Kerry

I think you will find H H SCHMIDT was registered at birth and death as Hermann Adolph but may have also had Heinrich (Henry) as another middle name since his father was named Heinrich. Mother was named Anna KILIAN.
Hermann * SCHMIDT was born 2 Dec 1872 at Stockwell in the Angaston district. Reg #119/332
The SCHMIDT family moved from Stockwell to Quorn in the 1880s.

Some interesting details of his life at the bottom of this page.
http://www.southaustralianhistory.com.au/gordon.htm

His Obituary.
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1931 - 1954)  Friday 7 September 1945
Mr. Hermann Schmidt, who died recently at his home at Gordon (NSW) at the age of 71, was well known for many years in the northern areas of South Australia and the Broken Hill district, where at different times he was a boundary rider, shearer, colt breaker, athlete, mail driver, scalper, publican, race horse owner and trainer. He twice crossed the continent from Adelaide to Darwin with saddle and packhorse. During his horse training days he bred Valour, Lord French, Pastoral, Lady French, French King, Lady Gordon and Zaika, among others. After driving the Innaminka mail for a number of years for the late Mr. Oakes, of Merty Merty Station, Mr. Schmidt purchased the Innamincka Hotel. Later he was in business at the Lyndhurst, Wilson and Gordon Hotels. After spending about two years in Adelaide he returned to Gordon, with his wife, son and daughter a few years ago.
(Gordon was not in NSW)

Hermann married Evelyn TURVEY on 28 Jun 1913 in Adelaide. The TURVEY family were resident in the Frome district for some years.

A daughter, Hazel Victoria Evelyn SCHMIDT born at Gawler 17 Jan 1911
Married Jack Vincent FARGHER on 10 Jul 1931 at Quorn.

A son, Rounsevelle Herman Heinerig SCHMIDT born at Goodwood 7 Jul 1917

Hermann Adolph SCHMIDT recorded age 71y died 9 Jul 1945 at Gordon.
Evelyn SCHMIDT recorded age 81y of Quorn died 3 Oct 1962
Both are buried at Quorn

Essie

ADDED:
Hermann's middle name was given as Heinerig on his marriage record and on the birth record of his son.
