Help with death record please.
« on: Monday 19 August 13 06:43 BST (UK) »
What does the N G stand for here, after the person's name, please?    No grave??  Surely not  - or is it?    1791 record of St James, Middlesex.  I notice both people with N G are widows - I think.

Any help gratefully received!

No idea, but I have seen references elsewhere to "new ground". However, you would expect widows to be burried with their husbands, unless they are in new ground too. Seems to refer to a particular section of the burial ground.

That's another possibility - thanks GR2

I've also just noticed the names a couple down from these two women seems to have a 'p' before  the final column - Interesting - wonder what that means.  :-\

I just had another look at the whole page - not all the people with NG after their names are women - and there are lots who have P after them - can't see any with both though - just as a matter of interest.

Not sure what it means but I have found similar references on the burial records on the Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project site. It seems to refer to the type of grave

Hi,
I am guessing the P may mean Pauper.

NG may mean no grave or None Given.
What the the heading of the column?

But what is non given??  Please!    ;)

All those, on the Lancashire link above, would make me think that 'new ground' might have been a goer.   :-\

There were a lot on that series of records weren't there.

Thanks Carol!

I suppose it would be the same in UK/England.  Does that mean place of grave was not given then.

Dj, the letters were in the same column as the name - no separate column.
