Martin Kavanagh + Margaret Malone
« on: Monday 19 August 13 10:51 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to trace details of my great grandparents: Martin Kavanagh and his wife Margaret Malone. I believe the family were from Co Carlow but may have lived in Co Kilkenny at some point. My gran, Margaret, was born c1894. Can anyone help?

Regards, J

Have you searched for them in the 1911 and 1901 census yet?

This might be the family in 1901-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,found a few bits that may help.

1901 Irish census:
Reevanagh,Tiscoffin,Kilkenny

Martin Kavanagh age 39,head of house,roman catholic,born Carlow,agricultural labourer,married
Margaret Kavanagh age 30,wife,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,married
Mary Kavanagh age 14,daughter,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,scholar,single
Kate Kavanagh age 9,daughter,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,scholar,single
Margaret Kavanagh age 7,daughter,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,scholar,single
Patrick Kavanagh age 5,son,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,single
Martin Kavanagh age 4,son,roman catholic,born Kilkenny,single
Ellen Kavanagh age 0,daughter,roman catholic, born Kilkenny

I have found the births of some of the children in Kilkenny:
Mary Kavanagh born 1887
Patrick Kavanagh born 1896
Martin Kavanagh born 1897 and again in 1898(the 1st little boy must've died)
Ellen Kavanagh born 1901

for the two middle daughters it was different;

Kate Kavanagh born July-Sept 1892 Carlow
Margaret Kavanagh born April-June 1893 Carlow
* I could not locate them in co Kilkenny

Martin Kavanagh and Margaret Malone were married in 1886 in co Kilkenny

I found a few births for Margaret;

b 21 May 1867 Dysartmoon,Kilkenny to John Malone/Bridget Lalor(Lawler)
b 18 Apr 1864 Inistioge,Kilkenny to John Malone/Margaret Fleming
b 11 Jan 1868 Kilkenny to Patrick Joseph Malone/Bridget Agnes Carroll
b 27 March 1869 Kilkenny to Thomas Malone/Mary Bolger

This by all means are not all the births for Margaret Malone. If you go onto the pay per view site rootsireland.ie they have 22 births for Margaret between 1858-1872.

for Martin I have found 1 so far........

b 3 November 1861 to James Kavanagh/Biddy Kavanagh of Kildavin,Clonegall,Carlow
* I have a few other places to check and I will get back to you.

What I would recommend is to go onto rootsireland.ie,buy credit to get a copy of their marriage cert and hope at least one name of parent(s) is on it or contact the GROIreland online and order a copy of the marriage cert for 4 euro. They even have the facility now to e-mail you the cert.If you do find their parents I may be able to help further.Hope this helps,Kim

Hi Kim,
Thank you for this info. Looking at the 1901 census info I've found an Ellen Malone living next door with some more Kavanaghs. From this I believe that Margaret Malone's (born 2 May 1870 at Reevanagh, Tiscoffin?) parents were Patrick Malone and Ellen McMahon and on the Kavanagh side Martin Kavanagh's parents may have been Martin Kavanagh and Mary McDonald.

Regards, J

Hi, if you believe those are the parents, I have found 1 marriage cert and one question.

Marriage:

12 November 1845
Leighlinbridge, county Carlow
Martin Kavanagh
rel:Roman Catholic
Mary MacDonald
address:Knockea
witnesses: Thomas Kavanagh & Bridget Kavanagh

As to Patrick Malone's marriage, I could not find a marriage for him and Ellen McMahon anywhere. The only marriage I found was for a Patrick Malone and an Ellen MacCarty which took place at the Cathedral of the Assumption in Carlow. If you think this may be a possibility, I can give you the details, Kim

If you don't have them already, here are the details from Martin and Margaret's church marriage record:

Martin Kavanagh & Margaret Malone
20th May 1886 at Clara RC Church, Co. Kilkenny
Both give their address as Rivanagh (Reevanagh)
Father's names are not recorded (the civil marriage record would give these)
Witnesses: James Dooley and Catherine Malone (notes say her name was given as Kate).

I you want them, I can provide further details regarding their children's births etc.

Thanks guys

I already got these details recently when the Co Carlow records went online. I believe that Ellen Macmahon was born Ellen Mahon to a Thomas Mahon and Bridget Ryan in 1833. I also can't find her marriage record.

What I don't know is how to find the date of death for Martin Kavanagh and Margaret Malone. I assume they both died in Co Carlow after 1901. My gran visited her mother, Margaret Malone, before the second world war, but I believe Martin was dead by that time. I also don't have a date of death for Ellen Malone (nee Macmahon/Mahon), although she is in the 1911 Census at Reevanagh.

Thanks, J

Update: I now realise that Martin Kavanagh must have died between 1901 Census and 1909 when his wife/widow Margaret married a Michael Comerford. She is listed in 1911 Census as wife of Michael Comerford along with her two youngest Kavanagh children, still living in Reevanagh.
