Hi, the reason I'm asking is that my sister was buried in Eston cemetery end of 1980. As she was a baby my mam said they had a church in the graveyard where babies went from, it was either that or graveside and as it was snowing they went from the church. Don't think St helens was still in use in 1980? My dad said he thought the church was called St. Hildas. Can't find a family member who remembers, even the ones with the good memory's!

St Helen's closed about 1962 I think.  At one time it was used as a cemetery chapel but not in 1980.  Apparently the graveyard, which is very old and still in use, is next to where St Helen's was.  Perhaps in 1980 there was a cemetery chapel by another name in the cemetery grounds.

Have you tried Bereavement Services (Redcar & Cleveland) or Local Studies (which I think would be Middlesbrough Library).  They would be able to tell you if there was ever a church or chapel in Eston by the name of St Hilda.

Sorry I know little about Eston, my interest lay in my grandfather's eldest brother who died in Eston Mines and is buried in Eston Cemetery.
