Arnott family Kinross Scotland
« on: Friday 23 August 13 02:15 BST (UK) »
My name is Robert Newton Wilson and I am researching my paternal grandmother's family. I have traced back to a Major William Arnott 1660-1695 who married a Janet Whyte in Auchmouty,Markinch,Kinross-Shire, Scotland. They had one child,William 1685-1721. Major William's parents were William and Catherine Burt. How do I start to research his military history?
Thank you for any help provided
Regards
Robert n Wilson

Try looking for him in the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland. Also do the same for the National Archives in London.

I am descended from Walter Arnot, the twin brother of one of the 15th century Arnots of that Ilk, and while researching him came across a book called "The House of Arnot" by James Arnott, published in 1918. There might be something there. I'm sure that I later came across a free-to-read on-line version, but can't remember where. Perhaps via the National Library of Scotland site?

Think there is a free download of one chapter as a demo otherwise the CD is £14.99.

Thank you GR2 and ev. I am finding the family research quite a challenge with quite a few cross marriages with the same names ie cousins marrying and same name spouses but will try to follow your directions. Thank you both. My Arnotts came to Australia in 1855. I live in Victoria, Australia. If I plan a trip to Kinross shire, are there good local family research societies?

Hi Robert, just wondering how you got on with seeing if you could find out any military history on Major William Arnott.  Like you, am descended down the same line and am also in Victoria.  Look forward to hearing any news.
