George Boucas - Artist / Photographer - 1879-1941
« on: Saturday 24 August 13 15:49 BST (UK) »
I would be most grateful for information on George Boucas (AKA George I. Bougioukas) Born 1879 in Agia Paraskevi, a town of Mytilini on Lesbos Island, Greece. He seems to have moved to England in 1897 with his brother Eustace J. Boucas (b. 7 Nov 1880 in Lesbos Island, Greece - 1965 in America?) and married an English woman?.
He opened a photographic studio at 120 Mile End Road, Stepney. Exhibited at the Royal Photographic Society Exhibition in 1901. From 1902 until 1910 shown as having a photographic studio at 195 High Road, Ilford, Essex.  In 1912 he opened a studio in Smyrna (Izmir, Turkey) and was the official photographer of the Greek royal family. He may have married for a second time and may have died c.1941.
His brother Eustace emigrated to Massachusetts, USA where he married and was also a photographer.

Any info or leads welcome
With thanks - Bobfilm  :)

Sounds interesting.  I thought the brothers were together in 1911 as Eustace is with a George but surname and age is wrong  :-[

The National Archives have his naturalisation record(1904) as well as that of Eustace(1911).Unfortunately they are not digitised.
Also there are copyright record for various photographs attributed to his studios, one of which reveals his colleague in Ilford as Frederick George Paget.

Regards
Roger

A BOY PREACHER'S PORTRAIT
A Disputed Copyright
"Jack Cooke" the "boy preacher" appeared at the King's bench to-day. he was co defendant with the Rev Mr Ccutts and a Mr Reynolds in an action brought by a photographer. Mr George Boucas of Illford, who asked for a declaration that the copyright of a photograph of of Mr Cooke was his and who claimed that the defendants had infringed his right by reproducing the photograph-an infringement for which the plaintiff asked damages.

Been looking for a marriage but haven't found one nor have found him on a census in England.
He could have been abroad census time if he flitted back and forth.

Did he have any children with the English wife do you know?

1911 census just has F G Paget (photographer) & family so he'd gone by then.
Consular deaths Athens 1946-50 has a George J Boucas aged 64
1930 US census has Eustace with wife Frances b. Wales & son Pericles b. England.
Emigrated 1922.
Eustace listed as a portrait photographer.
