Challenge General DYSON MARSHALL KCB
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 23:39 BST (UK) »
This may be a bit of a challenge...
Anyone able to find out where Sir Dyson Marshall KCB was actually born. BTW I believe the date of birth which is out there (1774) to be completely wrong because he joined the East India Military in 1771 (see The East India Military Calendar: Containing the Services of ..., Volume 1).
On the off chance, based on spectulation, he may link with Maj Gen. Josiah Marshall (1772-1845) and with the Marshalls in Ireland, possibly around Fahan and County Donegal. I am assuming he would be born circa 1750-58. He dies in Cawnpore in 1823.
Thanks in advance
James

That is strange but being christened there could be some years between birth and christening. Also there are some marriages of Simon Marshall's daughters which have him (simon) there in 1840 and poss. Late in 1843. I think there is a book out there which will help but the British Library is not completely open today and I was hoping to look into it. The book is Marshall of Manor Cunningham.

Although the Marshall of Manor Cunningham book has proven to be extremely useful confirming a number of Marshall's from donegal, unfortunately I could not find Dyson Marshall or his line in there. However the book tended to side on the Rev. Josiah Marshall of Fahan side, and whether Dyson is an off shoot from his father Henry Marshall that could be possible. The reason I am tempted by Dyson Marshall is related is because of the East India Company links. Loads of the Marshall's of that donegal area were HEIC.

I am going along with the 1752, with poss. Capt William Marshall as father but would be good to find out where they come from.

This may prove useful: I have a biog entry in a military history book which lists Dyson Marshall's parents as Captain William Marshall and Charlotte Jennings, daug. of Captain Robert Jennings. Assuming their dobs are circa 1725

A few questions:-
Is the biog/military history book online?
Are William Marshall and Robert Jennings HEIC?
What form of record and from what source is "the 1752"?

Regards
Roger

Was sent a scan, it's from List of the Officers of the Bengal Army: 1758-1834 by VCP Hodson, which I don;t think is available online.
