For some time between 1867 and 1873 my TYRIE family left their home in Bermondsey and lived at Fancy Walk in Stone. Alexander TYRIE was a cooper and his son (also Alexander TYRIE) was an apprentice cooper.
Would anyone have any ideas as to why a cooper would relocate to Stone for a period of no more than 6 years. Would there have been a been a sudden demand for coopers? Why?
His father and his brother were involved with naval coopering but he does not seem to have been.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

I know that Joules Brewery was located in Stone. I wonder if that was where he came to work?
There is a picture of the Brewery on the Staffordshire Past Tracks website

I would have thought, moved for work. May be there was too little opportunity where they were or was there some family they moved near to. Also was the son apprenticed to his father or someone else. May be they moved down with the opening of a new business.

I see on the 1871 census, there is Thomas Gray and his father Richard (also living in Fancy Walk and neighbours to the Tyrie family) who are both Coopers from Devonshire so it probably was something to do with their work

I was browsing through the 1871 census for Stone and a few pages on from the Tyrie family entry, there is a Charles Williams, with wife Agnes and children Charles and Agness.
They are living in Alma Street
RG10; Piece: 2822; Folio: 20; Page: 36
Charles is also a cooper from Deptford in Kent.
Guess what! Charles William Williams married Agnes Tyrie on 7th August 1859 – Father Alexander Tyrie

It seems to indicate that they came up to Stone to get work there, we may never be absolutely certain!

Hi,

Alex Tyrie is my 3rd great-grandfather, so intrigued how you are related to him. I have a wonderful photo of the coopers stood together (I can identify Richard, Alex's son easily as have several photos of him - unsure which is Alex/other family members).
I've been wondering myself over the Staffordshire relocation - however this thread has been enlightening! So thank you.
