errant father

We have been searching for my wife's missing father who was not married to her mother, her mother Catherine Jones lived in Bangor and in 1946 had my wife, who as told that your father died in the war although he was not named on the birth certificate, he was named on her baptism form as John  Deacon he may have also be known as Jack. We have not found any Deacons who are on the electoral roll in Bangor around 1945 or there is a possibility that he was in the army. Can anybody help us where we could proceed from here, any help very much appreciated
