G'day all.

Life is full of coincidences isn't it? I've come back to RootsChat after some time this time looking for a WRIGHT and blow me down but the latest entry is someone looking for a WRIGHT! I'm wondering if this could be the same line as the one I'm tracing.

I have John WRIGHT marrying Ann WILDIN on April 6 1818 in Astwood, Bucks and think they might be the parents of  one of my great grandfathers - Abel WRIGHT. I think he was born in 1826 although it may have been 1824 in Chesham and, in 1849 he married Caroline RIDDLE.

There are a lot of people with these characters in their family trees but, so far, I've been unable to find a birth entry for Abel/Able/Arel so can't actually connect him to John and Ann.

The tip about joining the Bucks Family History site was a good one and I have done so today. My next step will be to request a search for my missing g grandfather!

Cheers,

Simon

Simon,

Can help you out a bit. I havve come across Abel, but only to eliminate him from my tree. John Wright/Ann Wilding did not have any children called Abel.

Chesham is a significant travelling distance from Astwood. They have a son in 1824 Eli, and a daughter in 1826, both in Astwood.

Ancestry has a lot of incorrect trees. Its almost too easy to add people in to a tree creating some dramatic errors!! Your Wrights, assuming you are certain he is born in Chesham will almost certainly have  family close by, so restrict this earlier search to south Bucks.

Family search is a pretty good tool as well, and more accurate than the ancestry tool.

Mike

Thanks Mike, a certain negative is better than an uncertain positive!

Could be, a friend has also suggested him. As you say, check it out - and then some.

Soooooo

From BucksFHS the evidence does indeed suggest Charles was in fact born in 1722 the son of Abraham and Mary. He was born in Stoke Goldington.

Ruth Hull, born in Hardmead in 1722 has parents who also (it appears) come from Stoke Goldington. Why did they marry in Clifton Reynes? not sure but i cant find any one else of these names being born there (i have years  1720-1820 baptisms).

Also in Hardmead at the same time is an Anne and a Mary Wright. There are other local (Lathbury) births to a couple- Abraham and Mary. Charles has a brother Abraham born 1727 so this is possible.

So looking interesting then.....

Hello Simon.

Why not get the Abel Wright / Caroline Riddle marriage cert of Sept 1849 in Amersham RD ref 6/434 to at least get his father's name. The 1851 & later censuses have him born Bellingdon, Chesham so why you think he was from Astwood, son of John Wright & Ann Wilding is a mystery to me. They had 12 children baptised at Astwood between 1818 & 1838 & none was named Abel.

In 1841 Abel Wright age 15 was ag lab at a farm in Bellindon hamlet of Chesham.

As far as I can see, this Abel Wright(1822-1825), seems to be born Chesham in the census.  Using BucksFHS church finder, the marriage occured @ St.Mary, Chesham.
In the 1851 census, the appears to be 2 children with them, Mary & John REDDLE(Daughter & son).  Plus a son, Henry Wright c1850, Chesham.

The Cholesbury baptism is correct.  (Confirmed by BucksFHS- Cholesbury Transcripts CD.)

Baptism - 11 Jan 1818.  William. b.11 Dec 1817 son of William & Kitty WRIGHT of the parish of Chesham, Labourer.
Baptism - 25 Nov 1821. Abel born 19 Oct son of William & Kitty WRIGHT of Bellendon, Labourer.

BucksFHS Cholesbury Marriage.

9 Nov 1815.  by Banns.
William X WRIGHT, Bachelor. of this parish but a native of Chesham
Kitty X BRYANT, Spinster otp
Witnesses - Sarah Bryant & George Sills

John,

its easy to get thrown off the scent with trees like this http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/29028/family?cfpid=6595041655.

There is a lot of confusion can arise specially when looking at such a common name as this. I don't know what criteria Ancestry uses to make links ans suggestions but they are often wrong and misleading.
