Now it seems Charles was from Devizes and then moved to Hampshire and then Canada and then sometime after his children were married moved back to Surrey.

Do you know the date of all the marriages of his children ?

Sadly I don't although Ellen had to have married Edward Hanify sometime before 1917 because that is the year my Grandmother was born. And Ellen and Edward were married by the time she came along.

That is intriguing as well. I knew my Grandmother had some connection to Ireland but i had just assumed that that came from Ellen's Husband Edward Hanify. And I know there is a connection to Surrey somewhere through Charles because I found a letter written from one of my grandmother's relatives in Surrey related to Charles thanking her for her visit to them when she was in her late teens.

Sadly I don't although Ellen had to have married Edward Hanify sometime before 1917 because that is the year my Grandmother was born. And Ellen and Edward were married by the time she came along.

Marriage 16 May 1915 York
Helen Rose Louise Shadwell age 19
Father Name:   Chas Shadwell Mother ELLEN Hook
Spouse Name:   Edward Hanify age 31 born US father John mother Mary Quirk

Helen Rose Louise Hanify age 19 England
father Chas Shadwell Humber Bay ONT.
Arrival Date:   Jun 1915 Port of Arrival:   Port Huron, Michigan, United States
Residence Country:   Canada

The  info. ties in with your post naming Ellen Rose Louisa Shadwell’s husband as Ed Hanify
1901 census gives Ellen’s  mothers name as SARAH born c1870 Alderney YET the info. below gives her name as HELEN born c1874 IRELAND
  ???

previously given but thought it easier to view if they are altogether

Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905-1957

Helen Shadwell age 43 (b1874) Birthplace: Inneskillen Ireland

Port of Arrival:   Detroit, Michigan
Accompanied by:   Daughter Bessie
Departure Contact:   Husband Chas Shadwell Lake Show Road
Arrival Contact:  Son-in-law Edw Hanify

Helen & Bessie Shadwell Arrival Date:   13 Jan 1918    Port of Arrival:   Detroit, Michigan

I’m assuming that Mrs W E/T EDWARDS is daughter Cecilia and again

Helen Shadwell 1873 Ireland occ Nurse WIDOW
Arrival Date:   Sep 1922 Port of Arrival:   International Falls, Minnesota, United States
Residence Country:   Canada
Nearest relative daughter Mrs W T or E Davies 29 Billiar St Toronto Ont.

And from this marriage info. daughter Cecilia goes by the name of BESSIE

Mrs Shadwell 34 going to husband Carpenter
Fred 11, Ellen 9 & Cecilia Shadwell 5 Passengers came from Alderney
Date of Arrival:   15 Jun 1906
Vessel:   Canada port of arrival Montreal Quebec port dept. Liverpool

This entry also seems to be above family NO idea why she is named as Emma can only thing they made a mistake or misheard  ???  ::
Viewed the name again on the original it doesn't look like Ellen or Hellen it's certainly not Sarah

UK Outward Passenger Lists 1890 - 1960

Fred child 11,
Ellen child 9 &
Cecilia child  5
Departure Date:   7 Jun 1906 Port of Departure:   Liverpool, England
Destination Port: Quebec, Canada Ship Name: Canada

I’m looking to see if I can find Charles on a passenger list to confirm his occupation (not seeing anything on Anc*y) there is an entry on FindMyPast - sorry I don’t have sub.to check that for you  :(

Charles SHADWELL   1873    M 1906   Liverpool   Canada   Halifax

Charles born c1874 Devizes Wiltshire occ CARPENTER

Sarah born c 1870 Alderney Channel Islands

After talking to my Dad he remembered an Aunt Bessie who was Grandma's mother's sister that came to visit my Grandmother when he was a boy sometime in the mid 50s. I cannot find anything out about Charles dying anywhere. Also the two records I have from Ellen and Edward list Ellen's mother Helen but also as Sarah. And it does make sense in a round about way for her to have two different pobs. There is a record on another site of Helen/Sarah's father being a Military man so he may have been stationed in Alderney and if that is the case when they came to North America they may have decided to list her pob as Alderney instead of Ireland. Because at that time the Irish in both Canada and the States weren't treated the best.
