Hi Rob,

William Johnson, schoolmaster of Chester, was born Crosby Ravensworth 1832. There is a mistake on the census. There is no such place as Mossley Ravensworth. William's father is Richard Johnson born c1786, marr 15/05/1814 Shap to Elizabeth Farrer and died CR 23/05/1836 aged 50.

William's other siblings are Thomas (my gg grandfather) born 1817 CR, John b 1819 CR, Richard b1822 CR, Sarah b1825 CR & Ralph b1829 CR.

We are infact talking about the same William!

Regards,

Gillian

Hi Again Rob,

Just hd a thought. Who is the father on William & Mary's marriage cert? Does it say Richard Johnson, blacksmith? If it does, this confirms the connection.

I can confirm that the William Johnson/Mary Musselwhite marriage cert gives William's father as Richard Johnson occupation "Smith"

Hi All,

Thanks for the prompt reply and clarifying the matter for me.  What was confusing me was the other William Johnson (agricultural Lab), born in Crosby Ravensworth <1829> and living in Cliburn, Westmorland in 1881 with his wife Mary, daughter Margaret and grandson George - All born in Westmoreland. Do you know who they were?

Can anyone place the William Johnson who was Mayor of Chester?

Regards Rob

Hi Rob,

It's appears that we are related!!

I too had seen the Cliburn Johnsons but my mum was adamant that William was a school teacher in Chester. As I said my mum's great aunt Hannah of Crosby Ravensworth (daughter of Thomas Johnson) used to visit them a lot in Chester. Apparently this aunt Hannah used to do quite a bit of travelling.

I spoke to my mum last night & told her what I had found out about the Johnsons of Chester. I would be very interested to see any photos you have of them.

Best regards,

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

Would be happy to exchange photos.  I am still a novice at this so will have to first study how to send them.

Regards
Rob

Hello GiILLIAN

Its been a long time since this thread was active but I hope you see this. I am a Johnson decended from Herbert, he is my GGdad.

I know from reading these that you have done considerable research and I think we have common family. I would love to see and read whatever you can give me about the Johnsons.

Hoping to hear from you.
