My 2xGt.Grandparent George James Grant Captain,Merchants Service died June 1882 cannot find him in the 1881 Census has anyone any ideas why?Could he have been on the seas somewhere?

Do you know the name of his ship?  You could try looking it up, a lot of the ships now have crew lists. 
HAINES, NIXON, MEREDITH, HARVEY, WEDDLE, TWINAME.
