If this was 1930, and she emigrated in 1906, then it must have been about tne time of William (age 24) 's birth.

So did she marry William in England before she emigrated?  Looks like it, as son William bn England.

You havent given us Bertha's maiden name - I am assuming the 1901 census for her in Hyde was before her marriage?

Have you found their marriage in England on freebmd?  Marriage cert would then give you a fathers name for them both.

How do you know that the Bertha Cottam in 1901 is the correct one?

There are  baptisms for:

Bertha Cottam  26 September 1883 Oldham, Lancashire, England parents John and Mary

Bertha Cottam 13 June 1894 St Anne's Church, Haughton, Lancashire, England parents Harrison and Elizabeth

Bertha Cottam  18 June 1884 Bolton, Lancashire, England parents Thomas and Mary Jane

The Bertha on tne U S census appears to have middle initials  - Bertha B H

'Your' Bertha, on all censuses, and birth index, and christening, is just Bertha.

Why do you think the Bertha B H Thompson is 'your' Bertha?
