Is there any doubt that the cwgc entry is the right one?

If not - why would you think the 1915 marriage to Annie is a possibility

The only reason is that it is local to where he was living, it was the CWGC entry that sent us off looking for the Exton line otherwise would probably have given it a little more consideration initially. Now thinking about all possibilities, with view to ruling them out at least.

Hi,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but have been taking another look at George Sharp Allen (mainly as he appears to have been awarded the military medal and was trying to find if there was any information why he received it) and found this 'loose end' that I got distracted from the first time i was researching him.

Looking on Ancestry The UK Army register of soldiers effects. There is a listing for George Sharp Allen alias Grenville Sidney Allen wife listed as Dorothy S - obviously this now fits the 1916 marriage.

Having searched further, it looks like the marriage took place at Elson in the 1st quarter 1916. Could someone with access to the Elson parish records do me a lookup please. Think Dorothy Sylvias or could be Sylvia Dorothys father could be Henry (her mother would be Sylvia if I have the right family on the 1901 census) - no idea who might be recorded for Grenville or George's father, extremely interested to know.

Many thanks
Kev.

Have just taken advantage of the free access to findmypast this weekend and have viewed the marriage in the parish register - lists his father as Herbert a potato merchant. Looks like his wife's mother and father witnessed the wedding.

Now back to working out why he changed his name from George Sharp Allen to Grenville Sidney Allen & to look to see if I can find his father.

Many thanks to all who have viewed my request.

Maybe he changed his name because that Annie marriage in 1915 IS him!

Could be,haven't got around to buying the cert for that marriage. I got distracted on other direct lines in my tree and forgot about him, only started looking at him again after Ancestry allowed free access to Fold3 this weekend and thought I would see if I could research his military record further, which then lead to the marriage at Elson again.

Kev.

Hi,

Some trees at Ancestry show that it is a George Stephenson ALLEN that married Annie WOOD.

Looking at his Army records it shows,

Marriage Date:    27 Mar 1915
Marriage Place:    Register Off Sculcoalts

Regards,
Daisy

Hi Daisy,

Many thanks for the George Stephenson Allen marriage info, can definitely rule that one out then.

This is becoming an even bigger puzzle.

Thanks again
