Thank you all for such swift replies. The reason for the marriage being re-registered a month later was because Frances had omitted to give her surname of Solman - she had registered as Frances Hue. This still suggests to me that she was more aware of her father's name than that of her mother or step-father.

As a first time poster on Rootschat I'm not yet sure how to attach an image so will load up the marriage cert with her father's name in due course. It could be Zachome, Lachome or Lachorne.

Be back soon!!

From the parish register I think I would go with Lachome.

Certainly almost too fancy a name  for Mary Ann or Frances to make up!

ADDED:
Perhaps we could see snippets of both marriage registrations - the certificate from the church marriage in Sep 1863 & also the Register Office one of Nov 1863?

I've amended my reply #8 above to link to the Sep 1863 snippet.  Can't get it to stick on this thread for some reason!

As I said before a birth cert doesn't show a surname.

This is the marriage though - she does marry in Sep 1863 as Frances HUE (and signs the register as such).

This is from the first marriage certificate.

On the 2nd marriage certificate of Nov 1863 the father's name and occupation have been omitted.

Could he possibly have had the surname Lachome [French? Italian?] & forename Hue [Hugh]? And Mary Solman mixed them up at some stage?  ???

I have an interest in this thread because of an ancestor of name "Hew", a possible variant of "Hue".

A search for Lachome Hue (on a well-known site) generates many "Hue" in passenger arrivals at Dover/Folkestone from France and also some French census records; these gentleman have Christian names such as Lalocomb, Salocomb, Saturme etc.

This is consistent with josey's suggestion of French/Italian origin, and also with an inability to locate him in UK records.
