Here's a description of the school in Kilmancrennan that opened earliest:
"was built adjacent to the Church of Ireland on Main Street Kilmacrennan sometime in the 1820’s.  It was a ‘Robertson School’; that is one of the 28 schools in the country that received funding from the will of Colonel Robertson, an ex army officer who had directed that £9’000 left in his will be spent on building schools, teachers salaries and books.
Though the school was affiliated to the Church of Ireland, some Catholics did attend there.  This school closed in 1969 with its’ remaining students moving to Portleen National School.  The building is now used as the Church of Ireland Parish Hall."

By 1837 there seemed to be more schools:
"There are two public schools, of which the parochial school is supported by donations from Col. Robertson's fund, and in which about 210 children are educated; also nine private schools, in which are about 480 children, and five Sunday schools."

If he wasn't in Kilmacrennan directly, for example if he was in Termon or elsewhere, somewhere closer would be more likely.  Schools were much smaller then and needed to be within walking distance.
