national school culkeeny malin
« on: Saturday 21 September 13 17:10 BST (UK) »
could anyone inform me if the education of children took place in glengad malin co Donegal around 1890. If so where was the school. I know there was a school at culkeeney glengad area up to late 60s but I do not know when it first commenced there, or if there was a record of a school before culkeeney commenced. I am looking for a possible school register for glengad area for late 1880s if such a record is available in the archives someplace.

Hi,
A  system of education, known as National Schools, started in the early 1830s and the records of many of those schools in Northern Ireland are available in PRONI. The records for the Republic are probably available in Dublin.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Yes there was another school in Culkeeny, Malin, Co.Donegal prior to the one you mention in your question. It was situated approximately 200yards down the road from the 60's school which you talk about on the site of a present day pub. The exact location can be seen on Griffiths Valuation which was compiled as far as I can remember in 1853. I can't tell you if there are any records of the students attending but these should be traceable from the Irish Census of 1901 and 1911 and prior to that Griffiths Valuation. I was born local to there so someone born in 1890 would be my grandparents generation so there's a good chance I'd know them.
