Colville Family Letters
« on: Thursday 26 September 13 11:06 BST (UK) »
in talking to a regular "fare" (I am a taxi driver) He told me about a box of letters found in the attic of a house which his family owned WAY back.. I stated i was interested in taking a look at them and he said that was fine. and that i could scan or photograph and attempt to pass on the digital records although he would like to retain the originals. So he allowed me to borrow the papers and i am currently working my way through scanning the lot.

they are letters home from at least three members of the Colville family.
Parents Archibald Colville (blacksmith) of london b approx. 1779 and Mary Peters.
Letters are from
James Colville b. 1816
Robert Colville b. 1822
Archibald Colville b. 1811

other siblings mentioned are
Mary Ann Colville b. 1813
Elizabeth Colville b. 1824
George Colville b. 1827

I would very much like to pass on this digital record to a descendant of this family.

Ok well i shall try and trace downwards then :P
The family Colville seems to be in London and in Glasgow and be black smith and bookbinders.
two of the boys James and Robert served in India and thats where the letters are from.
George the youngest went to sea.. and apparently died.
Elizabeth marries slightly latter than most and her husband died less than 4 years later.

other names are miller and dickenson.

Have you tried to find a matching Family Tree on Ancestry...I'm sure there must be Colville researchers who would welcome these pieces of social history.

I have looked for a matching tree to no avail. :( there are addresses mostly of Elizabeth as the letters are from her brothers, although some to Dad and from memory there might be a Scottish address or two.. I shall rake them out when i get home.

Debpat. Re Collvilles. I have just completed returning WW1 medals for a Scottish soldier living in Scotland.(Selkirk) His medals were found in NZ and I managed to track his widow and children to OZ and then to NZ, and only this week the remaining family in NZ are getting his medals back at a special ceremony. Two of his grandchildren are in the  NZ military and it just seems right that they should have his medals back.I dont know whether the Colvilles in Glasgow are connected to the ones from Selkirk(they could be with some research) but should there not be a suitable place for the family letters may I suggest that no doubt they would be off great interest to other Colvilles particularly as they are letters from the war years.
Sorry to go on a bit but i felt that you might like to know about it and coming from a retired London cabbie now back home in the Scottish borders.!!

Yes there is a Glasgow link the family there appear to in the bookbinding business and fairly well off. The boys that wrote refer to uncle in Scotland and I think Alexander's father was born north of the border.
