Asylum records
« on: Friday 27 September 13 12:39 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone . I have found through an old letter an ancestor was in an Asylum in Cambs, unfortunately no mention of the name of the Asylum or why she was there. The letter was written c1892 and states she had been there 2 years. Her name was Elizabeth Andrews , she lived at Sawston. She is missing from the 1881 census at home though and her husband William is alone 1891 census . Can anyone help please ?

hi
Any idea of her age in 1891 would help.
The county lunatic asylum for Cambridgeshire was  Fulbourn Hospital opened in 6.11.1858
She may be on the 1891 census under her initials and  that's quite hard to do without an age or place of birth.
The records for the hospital are at the Cty record office,Cambridge.Often there is a closure dtae for these type of records but you should  be okay for 1892.

Hi ciderdrinker thankyou for your rapid reply and information, I'm very grateful. I think she would have been around the age of 63 in 1891.

Sorry when I said Fulbourn I meant the hospital, which was the County Asylum for Cambridgeshire, although it is only about 5 miles from Sawston.

See

http://studymore.org.uk/4_13_ta.htm#Cambridgeshire

for some details on the asylum.

Fulbourn Asylum 1901
E A married female 73 no occupation, no place of birth Lunatic
RG13/1526/160 Pg13

Fulbourn Asylum 1881
E A married female 51 Labourer born Duxford Cambs Lunatic
RG11/1661/133 Pg11

Looks like she may have been in and out of the asylum during this time since in 1892 she had only been there for 2 years. It would be well worth getting her records if they still exist, although they can be upsetting.
