Smith family of Forbes
« on: Saturday 28 September 13 21:24 BST (UK) »
Has anyone researched Edward (Joseph) Smith and Eleanor (May) Smith (nee Steele)?  Eleanor was Irish Catholic, and her obituary was published on 12/4/1902.   Edward died 1888 and apparently their gravestones may still be visible.  They had a large family born mainly around Picton.   Thank you.

Hello,     :)

There is one tree on A*****ry which shows Eleanor Mary Steel and Edward Smith - not too much else but worth a look maybe - she was born 1820 in Dublin, married 1844 in Sydney

http://trees.ancestry.com.au/tree/2042954/person/-1219521427?ssrc=

Seems Eleanor was a married to a convict, i.e. Edward - there is record of the marriage on "NSW convict permission to marry". - Seems Edward had a couple of aliases if this is the right record - does give her name as Eleann - 14 Jun 1844.   The column after her name and age is the ship she arrived on., and the last column is the clergyman marrying them

Hope I am not leading you astray - unfortunately I can't go further than this - don't have the required subs.

Neil, there are a few more BDM entries under the name of "Ellen" and as her 1902 Obituary from Trove says she left a large family of sons and daughters (no names sadly), I suspect that is her.  The earliest entry under Ellen was in 1847 - Catharine (I am researching Catherine, daughter of Eleanor Steele and Edward Smith, hence this query).  Armed with the earlier info today, I have been to State Archives to confirm Edward was a convict, Scottish Nat Archives to see he was sentenced in Perth, and Parmelia journey.  Such a wealth of info already I am very grateful for the Rootschat help you people give. :)

Don't know about being incarcerated - I think it says sentenced to 'life' then 'T o Leave' - ticket of leave??    Or was he assigned to Eleanor during his sentence?

NSW State Records Office has Edward SMITH ,ex the Parmelia of 1832, receiving a Conditional Pardon 31 Dec 1847.
http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexsearch/searchform.aspx?id=21

As per that CP
Edward SMITH alias John ANDERSON and Alias Henry HENDERSON
Arrived on the Parmelia 1, in 1832 and Gilbert was that ship’s Master.
Edward’s Native Place was Cumberland, and he was a Laborer.   His trial was at Perth  on 18 April 1832 for Shopbreaking.  He was sentenced to Life.  He was born 1812, stood 5 ft 4 inches tall, was of Ruddy and freckled complexion, with Dark Brown Hair, Greenish eyes and his Breast and arms were freckled.

I think these aliases were those used back at Perth, as I can see them recorded on General Musters in the 1830s.

I can see on the NSW 1878 Electoral Roll for THE BOGAN and for the Forbes Police District within that Electorate:
Edward Joseph SMITH, senior, of Mount Pleasant, freehold at Grudgery Mountain
Edward Joseph SMITH, junior, of Mount Pleasant, freehold at Grudgery Mountain
Patrick Goerge SMITH, of Mount Pleasant, freehold at Grudgery Mountain
Francis SMITH, of Grudgery, qualified by residence at Grudgery
Jeremiah SMITH of Grudgery, qualified by residence at Grudgery

On the 1870 NSW ER for The BOGAN and for the Forbes Police district
Napoleon SMITH, residence Grudgery.

On the NSW ER 1903    CANOBOLAS, polling at Bedgerebong.
Edward Joseph SMITH, grazier, of Badjerribong
Ellen SMITH domestic duties of Badjerribong
William STEEL engineer, of Badjerribong

Cheers,  JM

Thank you all again for the interest.  MAGM did you pop the reference to a William Steel (from the 1903 record) in as a suggestion for me to chase down?  All I know of Eleanor's origins (FROM another researcer) is she was born in 1820, Dublin.  Migrated in 1826 (aged 6) - aboard Archimedes.  No proof of this, except her obituary says she was 6 when she arrived in Aust. I couldn't find a passenger list from State archives for Archimedes.

No, I popped the William STEEL entry simply in case it may be of interest to you.

Re the ship for Eleanor  arriving 1826 aged 6 ...... likely she was with a parent, likely with her mother, perhaps arriving under sentence, or perhaps as a family of a garrison chap, or perhaps (less likely), as as an emigrant.
