I would like to find out more about the name Bidmead?
« on: Sunday 29 September 13 11:13 BST (UK) »
Hi,

When I was about 10 there was only 2 Bidmeads in the phone book my dad and a sports shop a few miles away, called A E Bidmead sports shop, my dads name, Albert Edward Bidmead.

The shops owners new nothing of us lol

Now I want to find out as much as I can about this name, I have found it's in Australia, US and Canada and also the Northwest of England. I was born in Edware, Middlesex in the 1960's and all I know is my family was from there.

I never knew my grandparents but we have a large a large family, many aunts and uncles, too many to remember  ;)

My name is Mark Bidmead, I will be shocked if anyone knows me Lol

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark and welcome :)

Are you looking for Bidmeads generally, or to trace your own line of Bidmeads back?

If the latter you'll need to note down what you know of the family as a starting point.  Was your father born 15 Oct 1916 in Reading*, married your mum 1950, died north London 1996?

*If so, his parents were:

Stephen Thomas Bidmead (born Maidenhead 1883, died Hendon 1967 aged 84), and
Florence Ada nee Watkins (born Hampshire 11 Oct 1881, died Hendon 1970)

...who married in Henley in 1907. They appeared with him in Hendon in the 1946 electoral roll and were still in Hendon (30 Goldsmith Ave, NW9) in 1965.

Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)

London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)

Thanks for that!  :)

That all sounds right as my far as I know my grandparents were born at that address, I didn't get to meet them though, they passed away when I was young. I know my dad was born there, and my uncle Ernie, that was the last of the line that lived in that house.

Your grandparents weren't born there - as I mentioned previously they were born in Berkshire (Maidenhead) and Hampshire respectively. However they were settled at 30 Goldsmith Avenue from 1929. Before that the electoral rolls show them at Reets Farm, Cool Oak, Hendon from 1922-1928.

Uncle Ernie would be Ernest George Bidmead, born 30 Oct 1924 Hendon (this was when the family was at Reets Farm). He died in Barnet in 2004. He and his wife Daphne Joan (1928-1993) are, as you say, shown with your grandparents at the 30 Goldsmith Rd address in 1965.

Reets Farm seems to have been one of the last vestiges of rural Hendon before it was all built up - it gets a brief mention here: www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=26880
