Could I be James IIII ?
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 00:52 BST (UK) »
My first attempt at family history research ever   ???  I'd be grateful for any help in finding my ancestors. My grandfather James William Green (market porter) married ??  His son JWG also (news agent) married my grandmother Emma Shrimpton 14 September 1902 at St Saviours Church, Denmark Hill SE London.  Emma's father, also a James William is down as a dock labourer on the marriage certificate. (Both fathers are deceased at the time of the marriage). I'd like to find out who James and Emma's fathers were married to and also my great grandfather JWG. I have vague memories of my grandmother Emma from my childhood and would love to know more. In addition to producing my father, emma and James also had George, Charles, Sally and 'Lal' (the eldest). 'Charlie' rumour has it,  was so good at safe cracking that he not only 'did time' for it but his talents were used officially during WWII. Any more information would be very gratefuly received. James.

Hi

When and where was JWG the newsagent born?  If he was born before 1881 - have you checked the 1881 census for him?

What was Emma's father's name and occupation according to her marriage certificate?

One place to start would be the 1911 census to see if James, Emma and family are together. (common names which might cause a bit of a problem)
Then it is a matter of progressing backwards to the 1901 then 1891 etc censuses.

Agree with Carol re needing to know the age of James - how old were James and Emma when they married? Knowing this might help narrow down the correct James Greens.  :-\

Emma Shrimpton bc.1882 Canning Town was the daughter of James Samuel Shrimpton (b.1849 Portsea, Hampshire) and Ann/e Beilby (b.1853 St. Luke, London) who appear to have married in the Dec.quarter 1871 St. Saviour, Southwark.
