Hazel(l) of Cambridgeshire
« on: Thursday 03 October 13 21:31 BST (UK) »
Hello to you all

I am visiting Cambridge over the weekend and would like to ask if anyone has MI's for the surname Hazel in any of the following villages.

Wilburton
Willingham
Witcham
Hitchin

An ancestor from my paternal side was born in Willingham (Henry Hazel) around 1860 but his siblings came from other villages mentioned and his father is shown on a census as coming from Witcham, I would like to visit these villages to have a look at the churches and any addresses I find if I get the time. My problem is time so do not really want to go to a village if there is no trace of the family to be found.
I can go to those villages at a later date when time permits.

John's wife was called Hannah Shipp (Henry's parents), she came from Over. And by coincidence another ancestor from my maternal side a Benjamin Bicheno was also born in Over and I wondered if either of these families have MI's around this area.

Many thanks for any pointers in advance

regards

Nick

Lot of Hazell burials at St Peters Wilburton but Willingham St Mary & All Saints and St Martim Witcham not so many

Hitchin is in Hertfordshire

Many thanks CaroleW

Yes I noticed that Hitchin is in Hertfordshire, my mistake. The eldest son of John was born in Wilburton and 4th son in Hitchin but all others were born in Willingham. It appears that John married Hannah in March 1841 at Wilburton so I will start there.

Do I take it that there are some in the other villages? Not sure if the grave yards have been cleared or the stones still exit. Many churches are clearing these old stones nowadays.

thanks again

Hi

Haven't a clue whether they are still there I'm afraid.  St Peters at Wilburton seems to have the biggest number - I'll send you a pm with some info
