Isabella Mackay *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 04 October 13 11:35 BST (UK) »
My gr-gr grandmother, Isabella McKay's details in the 1861 census were given as, widowed, age 87, birth year 1774, where born Melvich, Sutherland, though I believe it was previously in Caithness. She is living with her son John McKay, aged 40, born in Melvich  and his son Donald, aged 6 and born in Edinburgh, in fact, in Leith. On her son's marriage certificate in 1863 she is said to be deceased as is her husband Donald. Her maiden surname is said to be Mackay, although possibly this is not correct. I searched for her death between 1861 - 1863, but have not found any confirming death details.  If anyone has any information about Isabella I would be grateful.

Thanks Blinshall,
You mention her son marries in 1863 and at that time she is recorded as deceased. Is this the same son with whom she is living in 1861 - John Mackay? And does the marriage take place in Dundee?
If so this will be John's second marriage possibly. Have you found details of the first?
Sorry for all the questions just trying to get a clearer picture ;D
Looby :)

Yes, Looby, it is the same son, John Mackay who was married in Dundee on the 2nd October, 1863 to Anne McKay. It is his second marriage, his first wife, Ann McRae, dying on 30th January in childbirth in Dundee. I think they were married on the 11th January, 1845 in the Old Machar Parish, Aberdeen. John Mackay died in Dundee on the 18th September,1879.  His birth year varies between 1821 and 1829 on various documents. His mother's maiden name (Isabella) was given as Mackay on the death certificate. Thanks for your interest, Blinshall.
