Mar qtr 1890  HOLSTEAD Alice   Wakefield  9c   12

1880 - 1890 there is no marriage in England and Wales for a James Holstead to an Elizabeth or Ellen

if Ellen was b 1874 - that means she was 15 / 16 when she gave birth to Alice...so maybe Ellens father wouldn`t let her marry ...
was her name Elizabeth Ellen Carter b 1874 in Wigan ??...if so - they married in June Qtr 1895 in Bolton ....probably when she had reached 21 ....
or - did James and Ellen marry outside England / Wales ???...being a Platelayer ( laying down the Railway Track ) he could have been in Scotland ??
ADDED
IF Elizabeth Ellen Carter b 1874 Wigan is the wife of James Holstead
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk has her registration in 1874 and her Mothers Maiden Name is given as HOWARD ...
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

Hi and thank you for looking up information for me.

I think Elizabeth Ellen Carter (my grandmother) was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire in 1873-74.  I think I found her in the 1911 census under a wrong name of Nellie but with James, Alice and Thomas in Bolton.

In 1881 census I think I found her with father William and mother Emma and sister Alice.  I am not totally sure this is her though.

I can't find birth records for her though.

She married James Holstead in 1895 in Bolton.

Still trying to piece together her and James Holstead born 1870-72.

Any insights again would be great

There is an interesting border crossing for Helen Holstead (nee Carter) born 1875 Beoolesfield, England (transcribed as that but looks like Macclesfield) aged 63 years. Port of arrival :- Sweet Grass, Montana, USA on the Empress of Ireland. Accompanied by sister Mrs Mary Kirthan (spelling as transcribed - but more like Kirkham)  ??? 29 October 1938.
Last permanent address:- 2506 1 st street  SE Calgary Alberta.Name and address of nearest relative or friend in country from whence came was Thomas Holstead. Col??n. Alberta. Going to Malcolm Mackinnon - Cousin - Volta. Great Falls Montana. Pleasure for 2 days.
Distinguishing marks - upper teeth centre - out. Had previously arrived Halifax St John 1912 - SS Empress of Ireland. Had previously spent 2 weeks in July 1938 to Seattle via Eastport - brother-in-law Kirkham.
