How do I trace a line back to me when looking at bmd from 1700-1802.  The surname is the same, the christian names are repeated over and over, they were all baptised, married and buried in the same church.  It appears to me that half a dozen brothers populated half the village of Astley, and their offspring continued the tradition!  Do I start from 1802 when I have one name and try to work backwards from him, although the bmd only mentions the father on some occasions or do I need specsavers to try to read original scripts (whilst I still have a free trial on another site) or do I just ask you kind people to help again and take the fun out of things.  It's a minefield I only wanted a hobby.  Thanks to all who keep helping this newcomer anyway, I'm a week old today to rootschat.

Hi,

Are we talking about Astley in Lancashire:?

If so the following free site will assist when your free sub runs out:-

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Astley/ststephen/index.html

Read all the information, because it gives info on other Churches nearby.

I would suggest you need to work backwards, but why not post the one name you have in  1802.

Have you tried to discover any Wills with the Surname you are looking for, these are great to discover family connections.

Thank you Spendlove.  I will try your suggestions, yes it is Astley in Lancs.  BMD also throws up 2 churches, Leigh St Mary and Astley St Stephens but shows same baptism etc at both, dont know if they are separate churches or same and boundaries or something changed.  I have aburial date for my Cornelius Latchford who married a Martha Green in 1721 but I dont know who his father was as there is so many of them in the area and I can only find an Ellen and Henry burial 1702,they possibly could be his parents. Oh the joys

Welcome to rootschat

You are correct it is a minefield and pre civil registration you have less records to go on and more importantly less records to cross reference.........and that in reality is what genealogy research is about PROVING and needing to prove well beyond assumption, but with the records and in many cases you simply can't especially if ( and it happens in all our lines) repeating of the same names over the generations.

If you have narrowed it down to two parishes then you need to get a scanned copy of the actual parish records, (not a transcription, not a computer database) and even with that real copy of the PR you may still not be able to prove.

I often see online a part of what supposed to be my ancestry, each and every tree has one particular male named and they all have the line going back several generations but this particular male died in childhood and it is his cousin of the same name who was the one who married born the following year....so they are all wrong, however those people copy and paste from each other, from transcriptions and get information from databases.
I have the benefit of knowing the area and the church and having a full real copy of the PRs and I have never found his burial information online, how I found it was from the documents in the parish chest in the day book, which also shows his mother died in child birth along with his newborn sister which was not for some reason written up at the end of the week into the PRs and the day book for the parishes is rarely transcribed so not online.

This may help

Thank you Iluleah, there seems to be no end to the name I'm researching at Astley/Leigh.  Think I may try another branch of the family before I go cross-eyed, they had no imagination as to names, cant find a Tiffany anywhere.

I think you are right, it is something I have always done rather than get 'bogged' down and frustrated at not finding who I am looking for  :-\ work on another line and come back to this one with fresh eyes.

As many people didn't read or write back then, the only influence for many wasthe church sermons and the bible reading they heard, so many names came from there....just know you are not on your own some of my lines have several generations of William's marrying Mary's and naming their children exactly the same names, I even have a couple who were baptised John William or Richard William who changed to using William...of course marrying a Mary, it can get very confusing ::)

Hi newbiejoan
I don't mean to be funny  - and not sure how much of a newbie you are  :)  However, you really should be building a firm foundation of information starting with you, your parents, grandparents etc.  From your post it sounds like you're working the wrong way.

How did you come by your 1700-1802 Astley/Leigh information? Because if you've been researching moving from yourself backwards and reached 1802 then you should have some idea of where your ancestors were living (by looking at maps), know what they were working at and other factors that will assist you when looking at the parish registers.

If you have done all this - sometimes it is helpful to go back and reassess all the information that you have gathered. This may shed some light on things

Good luck

Hi,

According to Familysearch the Burial of Cornelius Latchford was 27th March 1802
at DEAN, Lancaster, Mother Mary.

(Batch) Number   B05236-2.

Is this the date you have for your Cornelius?

Hi Calafornia dreamin  I,ve got my gg-grandfather pinned down ok.  I know exactly when he was born from his police records (I mean he was a 'peeler').  I got most info from BMD and lancashire parish projects that rootschatters had suggested. The family didnt move from the same area until mid 1850's.  It became a problem when the same christian name cropped up father to son through generations, and if a child died as a baby they would give it the same name ie giles died 1730, giles born 1731; I found my lot were all baptised, married, and buried at the same church as well as never changing their names, all James and Josephs; this was when it went a bit pear shaped and it got difficult to trace back to my direct line, plus I must admit to having bits of paper all over (men are from Mars) so I have'nt been organised until recently.  It's good though, already found one murderer!
