Where to find
« on: Thursday 10 October 13 22:33 BST (UK) »
Hello
I would like to find out more about my Shetlander ancestor....as to when he emigrated to Australia, I have found records for Alexander Kerr Garriock/Garrick as being on various ships but not actually as a seaman but my suspicion is he was.  Can someone steer in the right direction to find out more about my ancestor, I know who he married and who his off-springwere when he arrived in Australia. he was born 11th September 1826 at Sandsting, his mother was Margaret Jamieson and father Scott Garriock. I have not found him on 1841 census but did find his mother and brother.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks
Bonnie

If he was at sea on census night, perhaps that could explain why he is not listed with the rest of the family. Though in later censuses there were arrangements for gathering census information for people on British registered ships, I wonder whether that was the case as far back as 1841. (I don’t know the answer to that question, but I expect someone on this forum does).

Hi Bonnie,

There is a boy recorded on the 1841 Census at Gruitquay in the Parish of Walls & Sandness called Alexr Garioch. He is 14 years old and his occupation is Male Servant.
He is living with a family called Robertson.
Scott Robertson aged 45 is head of the household and is a Fisherman and Farmer. He has a wife, several children and 7 servants (4 female ,3 male including the boy Alexr)

You may already have looked at this Alexander and ruled him out  :-\

Looby :)

Looby (that is what we call my daughter)
Yes I have seen that one, not ruled it out but not enough evidence to include it if you know what i mean…not sure how to forward with him now there is a gap from him being in Shetland and living in Australia.  I have found a few Garricks on crew shipping lists but only as Mr Garrick.

Thanks for your help.

Hi again,
When does he first turn up in Australia to your knowledge?
And does he marry there?

I looked for his family on 1841 Census BTW and couldn't find them. He had a brother Scott and sisters Agnes and Christian but I couldn't locate any of them :(.

Hi
He married in Victoria in 1857, in 1841 census i found his mother and brother Scott her being a widow I believe. Then found them in 1861 living together also sister Christina, in 1871 I found just the mother and sister, the mother now calling herself Garriock, in 1881 she is living in Edinburgh with a Agnes Watson who i think was her other daughter. Christina and Scott having both died by this time.

Thanks for your interest
