McMahon Pound Street Kilrush Clare Ireland
« on: Friday 11 October 13 01:26 BST (UK) »
Searching for Elizabeth McMahon born about 1814 (but may have been earlier) parents were Jas. McMahon and Alice. The 1853 shipping records state the family were from Pound Street Clare (Kilrush)

Elizabeth married Cornelius O'Brien of Shanagolden Limerick but no records exist as the marriage took place before records occurred in the parish.

First known births for Elizabeth nee McMahon and Cornelius O'Brien at Shanagolden Roman Catholic Church was:

Anne christened 25.05.1825; Godparents were Jeremiah O'Brien and Mary McMahon
Mary c. 10.05 1826: godparent, Mary McMahon
David c. 27.11.1827: godparent, John Barry and Mary McMahon.
Mary c. 18.02.1829: god parents: John and Ann McMahon
Michael c 05.01.1831; godparents, John McMahon and Bridget McDonnell
Ellen c. 10.05.1832: godparents Patrick and Ann McMahon
Margaret c. 06.09.1834; g/p Thomas McMahon and Margaret O'Brien
Ellen c. 13.03.1836 g/p Rev. Lce. Corbett and Elizabeth Kiely
Cornelius c. 21.06.1837 g/p Michael McDonnell and Mary Mann
Ellen c. 19.08.1838 g/p John and Ann O'Brien
James c. 23.11.1839 g/p Margaret Barry
Thomas c. 19.11.1842 g/p Thomas McMahon and Mary McDonnell

The family moved to Loughill and there are no baptism records available there prior to 1853:
Elizabeth c. 30.10.1851 g/p John and Margaret Sheahan (baptised at Glin)

The family emigrated to Australia in 1853 on the 'Blundell' - Cornelius was listed as aged 40 but would have been older as there was a cut off age of 45 for the free emigrants to come to Australia.

Elizabeth was in the ship hospital on arrival and died soon after.

Any help with the family's listed would be appreciated.

Thank you,
burrumbird

Dear burrumbird,

I'm originally from County Clare in Ireland and living in Australia. I'm currently researching the O'Brien family you mentioned. Here is some information on the family in a record from Newcastle Industrial School for Girls in New South Wales, Australia, where Elizabeth's youngest daughter Eliza (who was 2 when they boarded the Blundell) was sent: http://nis.wikidot.com/o-brien

I would be very keen to chat about any further information you might have unearthed on the family. Very happy to reciprocate.

Kindest regards,

Anne

Thank you so much KG.

I had found the ship's record in the New South Wales government archives noting the family's arrival and you can see 'Pound Street Clare' noted as the mother, Elizabeth O'Brien's address of origin: http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/ebook/list.aspx?Page=NRS5316/4_4790/Blundell_5%20May%201853/4_479000535.jpg&No=5

My Dad who still lives in Clare was able to tell me this was almost certainly in Kilrush, so it's great to have that verified.

I'm very keen to connect with anyone who might be family at either end.

Sincerely appreciate you help,

Anne
