Hood of Beal
« on: Friday 11 October 13 10:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all. Looking for informaton on John Hood married to an Alice, surname unknown at this time.  I have been tracing the family of Thomas Hood born 1785 and his son John born 1819 at Beal and I have discovered another John and would like a bit of help.  John Hood and Alice according to Lowick Presbyterian baptisms 1804-1849 had 4 children Elizabeth b 1828, Jane b 1830, Thomas b 1832 and John b 1834 all at Beal, if Elizabeth was the first child then marriage was possibly 1825 - 1828, possible birth for John around 1804.  My other John married Isabella Henry in 1848 and then Jane Robson in 1871, his father was Thomas b 1785 and married Ann Simmons, Thomas's father was Thomas and he married Elizabeth Armstong in c1776  As far as I can find out I am the only one in this line to carry on the name Hood, so any help would be great.

This isn't going to help you much but it is information

Burials Kyloe:

Jane daughter of Thomas and Anne Hood, of Beal, age 4 mo, buried 2 May 1814 (born 17 Jan 1814)

Jane daughter of Thomas and Ann Hood of New Haggerston, age 7 years, buried 10 Mr 1824 (born 27 Jul 1817)

Baptism at Spittal Presby:  James Hood born 16 Sep 1824, baptised 30 Sep 1824 s/o Thomas and Ann of Scremmerston

Also at Spittal Presby:  Eleanor Hood born 10 Jan 1826, baptised 27 Jan 1826 d/o Thomas and Ann Hood of Scremmerston

You should also keep this as it may pertain to your family.  Spittal Presby:  William Hood born 18 May 1787, baptised 22 May 1787 son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hood of the Parish of Ancroft

Alison Hood born 11 Apr 1779, baptised 16 Apr 1779 d/o Thomas Elizabeth Hood of Hillhead

Ann Hood born 4 Apr 1777, baptised 5 Apr 1777 d/o Thomas and Elizabeth Hood in Scremmerston Hillhead

To find out what Alice's surname is perhaps you should get the birth cert for the daughter they had named Alison   Alison Hood registered 1839 Sep q Berwick 25 pg 19

Alison Hood born at Beal 26 Jul 1839, baptised Lowick Presby 30 Aug 1839 daur of John and Alice Hood of Kyloe parish

There is also another John Hood having children baptised in Lowick Presby in the 1850's married to an Isabella Allan. (married Lamberton Toll 1852)

You may also have to look at the surname Wood.  It has to do with how the Victorian "W" looks like today's "H" and folks transcribing get them confused. Also keep an eye out for Hodd also.

Thank you Trish

I was just posting, tagged to a relevant quote (for others), information I had researched of a William A. HOOD at the place called "Tyne Dock" around the 1887 period.

I had researched it, to see if it might offer any other suggestions of a another HOOD claiming to be resident at Tyne Dock in an 1886 Marriage, but it didn't.

A fair few Hood had also migrated Southerly down our East coast into Northumberland and County Durham, from the Berwick upon Tweed area.
