Mary Teresa Murray
« on: Saturday 12 October 13 02:30 BST (UK) »
It would be appreciated if anyone could shed some light on Mary Teresa Murray. Murray is her maiden name , and Teresa could also be Terese.
She married a Walter Adam Firmin in 1867 in New Zealand. He was born in 1842 and died in 1924.I think he was born in New Zealand, but have no information on his wife Mary. I could find no birth or death dates in the NZBMD, which perhaps makes me think she may have been born overseas ?

Any information would be appreciated.

There was a Mary Theresa Murray born in 1854 in Sydney, Victoria, Australia with parents James Murray and Ann Daly reg 1802.   She would only be 13 or 14 in 1867 which seems a little young.

cheers,
  Ros

adding : no unfortunately she died the same year

Hi

Great  find Ros .... I have some NSW marriages mid 1800s zand around 1870s too where bride age on cert was 12 . When checked against other records  yes 12 ... not sure if still imaged but NSW BDM website used to list as an unusual cert a marriage where bride was 11.  So very young ... still  a child...

ADD

Oh  I see you too have noticed that death ...

Cheers JM

Thanks for that Ros & JM. I`ll start looking in Oz & England, but will need to find immigration records to verify she did come from overseas.NZ BMD does show many other Murray`s being born in NZ-just not Mary Teresa, although there are six Mary`s listed but the earliest born was in 1862 which is not early enough. Marriage date is accurate and shown in NZBMD, so if Mary was 16 when she married she would need to have been born in 1851(or close to that date)
Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I could find no birth or death dates in the NZBMD, which perhaps makes me think she may have been born overseas ?

David

The registration of births and deaths started in New Zealand in 1848, and marriages in 1854.  Before those dates you will need to look at church records.

The marriage record should give their ages, and the witnesses may be relatives.

Inquiry is made in Lloyd's weekly for the following.... George and Walter Firmin are inquired for by sister Mary Ann; George went to Ballarat, Australia, and Walter to New Zealand about 40 years since.
