Passenger lists: Arie Roothoff
« on: Monday 14 October 13 19:42 BST (UK) »
Hi,

is anyone able to look for Arie (written as Aric) Roothoff on one of the 1906 passenger lists?

Arie left Britain in 1906, heading for Canada. I would really like a copy of his passenger list so I can solve the mistery surrounding his persona (You can read his back story on Mr. Van Evelingen's website: http://www.evelingen.box.nl/roothoff/chapter3.htm). Unfortunately Mr. Van Evelingen died last year, so it would really mean a lot to finally solve the puzzle.

Many thanks!

Images of Canadian passenger lists are also here:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/index-e.html
(not name indexed but given a ship and date)

He is listed on page 14, about midway through the page.  Looks like he was headed to Winnipeg. Marital status single ::)

Could the writing over his line in the right hand column mean he was deported?

Not sure he stayed in Canada, see here (possible emigration to US through Canada in 1908)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XLDP-1NY
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K8MH-L9Y
 - this man does list himself as b. Australia

but here, marrying in Montana in 1908
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F373-DHZ
 - born "Australia" again, but look at those parents' names!  Somehow, I don't believe there was a second, Australian Arie running around whose mother just happened to be "Elizabeth Alderlierten".

New wife Sarah had children from her first marriage who I can find but not her or Arie (or variants).
I can find that her husband Joseph Foreman appears in later censuses with the kids listed as divorced:

Thanks Suz & Jorose!

Here's the 1900 Census Record containing the Foreman family (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11097-145956-45?cc=1325221&wc=MMPJ-2LP:n774604410). Joseph Moses Foreman happens to be born in GB and moved to the US in 1857.

As for Arie, here's a timeline based on the information so far:
  • 1874 - Born in Bennebroek (NL)
  • 1889 - Moved to Rosario (ARG)
  • 1893 - Moved back to the Netherlands
  • 1895 - Married Hendriksje Stolk
  • 1900 - Relationship with Jacoba van Driel
  • 1901 - Divorced Hendriksje Stolk
  • 1902 SEP - Visited Walla Walla, Washinton (USA), according to the the papers from March 1908
  • ? - Sailed back to the Netherlands?
  • 1903 OCT - Sailed together with his aunt Cato Lem from Hoek van Holland (NL) to Winchmore Hill (GB)
  • 1903 DEC - Married his aunt Cato Lem in Edmonton (GB)
  • 1906 - Sailed from Liverpool (GB) to St John (CA). Place of ultimate destination: Winnipeg, Manitoba (CA). Registered as a single male on passenger list. Divorced Cato?
  • ? - Sailed back to the UK?
  • 1908 MAR - Sailed from Liverpool (GB) to Halifax (CA) again. Place of ultimate destination: Midland, Ontario (CA)
  • 1908 MAR - Crossed the CA-USA border near Detroit Michigan
  • 1908 OCT - Married Sarah Foreman (née Davis) in Bozeman, Montana (USA).
Fun to see that Arie declared he was born in 'Bowden', Australia when he married Sarah. A couple of months earlier, when he crossed the border near Detroit he said he was born in Bogden, Adelaide, Australia. That particular record also states that his nearest relative or friend in the country where he came from is his Uncle, Hendrick Roothoff from "Cheltanham, Adelaide, Australia". There is, however, no record of his fathers brother Hendrik Roothoff living in Australia. Hendrik was born in Heemstede (NL) and died in Castricum (NL).

And so the plot thickens...  :)

There is a newspaper article that says Mrs. Sarah B. Forman says she was not married to A. Roothoff and did not know where he was.

Thanks!

Unfortunately "last week's issue" (Oct 15, 1908) isn't available on Google News. I would really like to know what it says about the marriage, though...

Maybe an e-mail to the local library would cause them to take pity on you and check?  http://www.belgradelibrary.org/contact-us/

This also lists libraries that have that newspaper - http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83025297/holdings/
