What on earth is the relationship?
« on: Tuesday 15 October 13 15:54 BST (UK) »
How on earth are these people related?

My step-great-great-great-great grandfather John was married twice and had children from both marriages. His first wife Margaret (my ancestor)  had children from a previous relationship.  Those children had children who were not only step-cousins but also married each other, thus becoming my step-great-great-great aunt and  my great-great-grandmother’s-nephew (which I think makes him my great great great uncle, but I may have missed a great out on him!)

I think that therefore the step g g g aunt is also some distant stepcousin by dint of her birth grandfather, but I'm hanged if I can work it out...

John's second wife = (2) = John = (2) = Margaret = (1) = Margaret's first partner

Grandchildren from John's second wife married grandchildren from Margaret's first marriage?

Grandchildren from John's second wife married grandchildren from Margaret's first marriage?

That's it:  John had a son (John II) who had a daughter Maggie. Margaret had a daughter Ann who had a son Joseph: Maggie and Joseph married.

Ok, so Joseph was your gt gt grandma's cousin (full blood), whilst Maggie would have been a step cousin (and then a cousin in law once Joseph and Maggie were married)

Therefore, Joseph was your gt grandparent's first cousin, once removed.  (For Maggie, just add step, because they are the same generation), your grandparent's first cousin, twice removed; your parent's first cousin, three times removed; and so your first cousin, 4 times removed.

I think.
